I am interested in a tuscan which has very recently had a rebuild done by power and has the 3yr warrenty, the car appears to have been looked after and has the normal stonechips, recent suspension etc etc.

The car is reasonably priced BUT has what seems to be considered high mileage for a tuscan at mid 50k

Obviously the engine is tip top along with any other replaced bits, car is 10yr old and has no rust (i'm told) so its still under 6k per year really which is believeable.

I must admit some of these cars at say 8 yr old with 12k on them sounds a bit off to me. Surely no one would do 2k per annum, christ i'll do that in the first couple of weeks i reckon biglaugh

Is there anything i should be concerned about i.e the gearbox and diff at this mileage.

And if i owned it for say another 15k or so would it be likely difficult for me to sell.

I won't post the car on here incase theres an influx of NO'S so i dont want to damage the sellers ad.

I bought my Tuscan in Oct with 43k on the clock and a power rebuild with warranty.

You need to check the big things

TVR Power rebuild - check
Clutch replaced recently?
Brake discs have plenty of life?
Power steering rack ok?
diff mounts ok?
Chassis sound?
Dash Pod working?

Other things are all relatively minor but can be niggly.

I took the view that if a car has done that sort of mileage then people have found it relatively reliable. I use mine for long work trips when the weather is good and it has been fine.

5k miles a year is low as an average

My previous car was 12 years old and had 5200 miles, and I had to replace lots of things like clutch cylinder seals because the car hadnt been used enough.

If the price is reasonable, then go for it, get it inspected, but don't be too afraid the engine is the real biggy and the you are looking at has a warranty so all is fine smile

I'm now at just above that mileage and things that have been done recently are:

Replaced steering rack
Replaced steering column
New clutch master cylinder
Diff bushes (all)
Cats breaking down (de-catted)
Radiator replaced
Oil pipes starting to weap so probably up for 2nd replacement v. soon
Also I think my PS pump may be on the way

Gearbox and diff fine so far.

That depends whether you are paying someone else to do the work. Apart from the diff bushes, I did them myself. It was probably around a grand for the parts.

That seems steep! I had mine done about a year ago, it was approx 4 hours labour and £150 for the refurb. Email me if you want to know the company that did the refurb and I will find the contact details. I also had a full geo set up afterwards which was extra.

I would love to know who did yours. I was told 3 hours labour to remove and another 3 hours to refit. I assume that geo was included inthe price

Maybe one of our favourite indies was being a bit keen to beat the recession?

It was removed and refitted by TH Works in West Sussex. I sent it to 01634-576654

Obviously every car is different but if it gives you any confidence, I have a 2000 Mk1 which is just about to hit 96k

Power rebuilt the engine for me at 42k three years ago and it hasn't missed a beat since. I'd say that 52k in the last three years has pretty much tested the whole car front to back and aside from the clutch life being circa 25k and having the shocks uprated, the only thing that has given up along the way was some of the syncro's in the gear box. Although that lasted until 85k.

It might be worth ringing Dom and seeing if they remember the car given that you say he did the engine recently.

Power want £350 for a rack recondition...

http://www.tvrpower.co.uk/store/slug/steering-rack...

To answer your question i wouldnt be put off by 50k miles. If its had the rebuild then thats the major risk gone. Give dom a call he may remember the car?

Clutch is the next big one, then shocks, then box and diff, but TBH box and diff arent a 'typical' weak point though people have had failures (such as the synchro for 5th on the box)

Shocks are fairly common to leak.

If the chassis is good and you can convince yourself the items already mentioned can be managed....go for it smile

I disagree. Mines a 2001 and has 35k on it. I bought it 2 1/2 years ago on 24K miles and it's now on 32k. It's second car which is really only driven during the summer and when the sun is out.

I work at home most of the time but when I go to the office there's no point in taking the TVR just to sit in traffic on the M3 and M25. Where's the fun in that? So it simply comes out on weekends when I get a break from my kids.

I think you'll find a lot of Tuscan's with similarly low mileage as I would guess most are not daily drivers

I meant generally for cars. I find my Tuscan prefers to be used, it is a second car but I have started to use it for work and its getting better and better.

Well i've gone for it.

Samoa blue 01 tuscan redrose smile

I have spoken extensively to steve darville from sd autotech and formely sscc, he has known this car from brand new and has told me all the ins and outs along with the current owner who has answered every question with good answers. Dom remembers the engine build and has confirmed the 3 year warrenty.
It appears that a lot of work has been done to the car over the years and has been well looked after.

I'm getting it next week and the day i pick it up will be the day the running in service is complete and new gaz golds are fitted on the front (rears done a couple of months back).

Lets just say i am very excited, which is strange for me as i never really look forward to much but i have wanted one of these for years and never got one until now smile

Well done that man thumbup

Great choice and great time of year to get one! Just go careful with the right foot they will still rip your head off on bone dry roads if your not respectful biggrin

If your having new shocks go for the gaz gold pro, not standard gaz golds, improved quality shock and mounting points...
