Extended Warranty - Is it worth the paper it's writte on?

Afternoon PHers,

A friend of mine has just purchased a 05 Plate Renault Scenic 1.6 16v Automatic from a local Renault Main Dealer.

He is happy with the car and the price he paid for it, but is dubious about the 3 year extended warranty they are trying to sell him - for £500. He has since haggled them down to £280.

A Quick Google has fetched some feedback which isn't too bad, but advice from a motoring specific audience would be welcomed!

Any experience with Renault's Extended Warranty? Is it worth the cash?

Is it underwritten by Renault themselves or are they peddling some other third party warrenty?

If it's by renault themselves it should be ok but read the small print. It will probably cover the major things only and not stuff like electrics/trim and obviously things that are wear and tear. It will probably cover you for MOT insurance as well.

If it's a third party warrenty then to be honest you may as well stick the money in the bank.

Mind you for £280 it may bring piece of mind that you have some sort of cover.

Since it's a Renault and it's £280 - go for it.
You'll usually have to phone Renault HQ everytime something goes wrong but at least you'll get the trade price

Not true, Renault as a company dont do any warranties except the 3yr ones. Car Care Plan are the only decent aftermarket ones available imho. If you have an extended warranty, the manufacturer would not normally offer assistance as their assistance is in place of an extended warranty.

It's a 3yr warranty offered by a Renault dealer so will be with whoever they have their agreements with, it wont be a Renault warranty.

my own experience with second hand warrranty on peugeot 206

Paid £280 for 2 yrs extra warranty

1st year altenator went west ,bill was £480

2nd year crankshaft pulley went east bill was £298

was it worth it ? YES

Did I pay anything ? NO

Took an extra year of extended warranty on my fiesta ST. Had an end plate of a gearbox leaking a couple weeks back, all re-sealed under warranty.

My Mum bought three years extended warranty on her 406 from a franchised dealer underwritten by a third party insurance company which paid for nearly £5k worth of automatic gearbox replacement, amongst other work! By the time your friend's warranty is over, he'll have a nine year old Renault, surely it'll need some electrical work or something by then!
