I've just sold my mental R1 engined fisher fury, and am looking for something else to fill the void. My previous two cars have been a GTM Libra and the Fury which was circa 350hp/ton so I am not really a stranger to fast cars. They were on kit car policies so I managed to insure them fine... wondering what the deal is with TVR's as I've heard some of the older TVR Chims and Griffs have been insured on Kit policies in the past.

Are there any young TVR owners amongst us here? Or am I probably barking up the wrong tree.. I'm 21 and have had no issues insuring my last two cars with Adrian Flux. Are there any TVR specific insurers or would anyone be able to reccommend a insurer to try?

I may be wasting my time due to my age, but worth a try!

Any help muchly appreciated smile

at 22 (oh hang on 23 after yesterday) the only place I found that would give me a decent quote and treat me like an individual (asked previous car history, would accept a letter from previous insurers stating that I was insured and never claimed as my classic policy's didn't build up NCB etc) were MSM insurance. all the rest were just a waste of time for me personally, others may have had better luck though

I'm looking into getting a Chimaera myself in the not too distant future, I haven't properly looked into insurance quotes yet although I did an online quote with Flux and was quoted £8,700 so I think I'll be giving them a miss. I'm 22 for reference although by June I'll be 23 and have another years no claims so hopefully that might help make it a little bit cheaper.

Although I'm an old fart compared with you (though still 'only' 35) I agree with the comment re/ MSM.

Matt, i may look like a stalker hehe but i've noticed you're in the UAE a fair bit, i'm out here a lot too, if you don't mind me asking, what do you do?

I'm also familiar with you're car, a nice example.

Maybe not any more, but I was 24 when I got my first TVR.

I'm a positively ancient 28 (as of last week), but FWIW I'm with Manning and they seem okay with under-30s providing you have prior experience of high performance RWD cars.

I got the Tuscan at 24 and paid just shy of £1k for insurance, max years ncb and 3points.
As soon as I hit 25 this dropped to £500 with Mannings, however they took into account a few things such as me driving RWD sports cars from 18 and the fact the I had the TVR for a year and didnt die lol.

Msm want £1800 for a 4.0 griff on 7500 miles. Not catastrophically bad considering I'm 21 with only 2 yrs NCB.

It'd be my only car though and I'm unsure about usability/reliability...

I am postivley old now but when i first lookekd at a Chim i was 24 and looking at £1400 on a normal policy when you hit 30 it drops like a stone as the door opens to classic policies etc. Previousley I had a westie for 7 years and the worst i paid was £300 when i was 25, i pay £380 on a Griff 500, clean licence and lots of rwd experience as a second car garaged etc etc etc.

Quite tempted by a chim now... Look like potentially a lot of car for the money!

I went for the chim as value for money was there over the griff, I also prefer the styling, I was getting quotes of about 700ish from msm from when I was 21 up untill recently for any chim I asked about, I will never pay over a grand for insurance, that is my limit since I 1st passed and never paid more than 800 so far, keep searching and a deal will come up.

I'm 21 and currently saving for a Chimaera or Cerbera, and by just using comparison sites so far (so no specialist insurers) I have found the Cerb to be cheaper to insure at just over £1k as a second car (clean licence, 3 years no claims) and the Chim a couple hundred more. Based on what I've seen so far I would save about a grand having an old Polo or something as a daily driver, plus that helps keep the TVR in better condition, allows me to take it off the road over winter and eliminates (most) reliability issues.

Just to add a little encouragement. When I got my first one - admittedly an S rather than a V8 - it wasn't £1500 or £1000, it was £240pa. So I'd be hopeful of getting it under £1k if you can still find someone who'll insure under 25s.

Mainstream insurers will be a waste of time so as mentioned above check around the specialist brokers that are listed around these pages. Still be prepared for a few "sorry no U25's" knock backs but keep going. You wil also be able to talk to them and include previous experience etc.

Alternatively try classic policies. The car will need to be 10 or more years old and will need to be garaged (usually) and not all require it to be a second car, but again be prepared for a few set backs along the way.

I was 21 (just) when I got my 450 Chim. I think I paid around £1200 for the first year as I didn't have much rwd experience. You'll struggle to find many insurers these days who will insure you under 25 but there are a few as has been said. Unfortunately, insurers recently all put their premiums up (can't remember the reason), and everyone I know who has renewed their insurance this year has paid a good chunk more than they usually do.

They're a good laugh to have at 21, though I would just make sure you look at the running costs, and I don't think its a good idea to get into TVRs unless you're at least aquainted with a spanner and a soldering iron. Just because many small jobs you will pay a fortune for at a garage - and there will be plenty of them! If you've had a Fury etc though then I'm sure you know your way around the garage smile
