So,
Due to a change in circumstances, it looks like one of the toys is going to have to go and i need a new 'everyday' car.
It needs to be fairly quick, practical (4 door) MPG isn't a massive issue as i don't do a lot of miles (<6k). As for servicing/general running costs - obviously not expecting ford fiesta money, but don't want a money pit either.
I have listed the 4 that i have narrowed it down to in the poll above. Budget is $10k - but obviously the lower the better.
Even though i say MPG isn't an issue, obviously the lower the better. Having done a bit of research the MPG for all these cars seem to be roughly the same??
I'm also open to suggestions if anyone can think of any? Age of the car isn't really a massive issue, but don't want something that is going to depreciate like a stone.

I have a copy of the EVO magbook - 'Performance car buying guide' and it seems to think that the E39 M5 is pretty bullet proof.
The onoly other thing is i'm not sure about teh M5 styling - i'm not sure if it's a but too understated - although it definately has the performance.
I love the look of the Alfa, but there aren't many around and i think trying to find a good one might be hard....

M5 every time. It's a genuine classic. A friend has just bought a mint facelift one for £8k, and I was astonished by how good it is - genuinely seems to shrink around you the faster you go; and the handling is awesome. The cabin is a nice place to be too, with the bi-colored leather. The only thing it needs is noisier exhausts. Wonderful beast.

When you say lower mpg I presume you mean higher? As in more miles to the gallon not less?
What sort of roads are you going to be driving on? As in will it be mostly town, motorway or B roads?
What sort of a driver are you? Do you prefer to cruise and have lazy power available or are you more enthusiastic chucking a car about and bouncing off the limitier? Do you like a hooligans car or more clean and tidy road behaviour?
I've not driven the Audi or been in one. But from what I've read about other Audi's is they are capable but not particulary fun tomdrive and have a very hard ride. Don't know if it's true for this one. Personally not keen on the image and think it looks the blandest on your list.
I like the look of the Alfa but I'm not convinced it's quite in the same performance league as the others and being fwd will be very different to drive.
Maybe not as speedy but I'd quite like the idea of an RX-8 here. 4 doors and a boot but good handling and rwd. A supercharger kit would solve the HP issue too. But it'll drink fuel, like some tlc and probably not the best residuals.
Evo is the most focused car on your list. But it'll also be the most hardcore to live with.
M5 is fast although I'm not blown away by the looks. Suspect it should be reliable, but being reliable doesn't mean it can't be costly to maintain.
An Impreza would be the obvious alternative to the Evo and slightly more refined.
Jag XJR to the M5 so long as you don't kind autos.
And maybe an ST220 compared to the Alfa. Although Mazda 6 MPS might be worth a look too.

I'd say i'm probably a fairly 'easy' driver unless i'm late for work. My commute is about 3 miles each way so not ideal really, mainly twisty country roads.When you say lower mpg I presume you mean higher? As in more miles to the gallon not less?

I do like the look of the Alfa and i love the V6 engine. Although it's not the fastest and only fwd i do think it has a bit of 'character' which makes up for it..
The RX8 looks nice, but a mte just sold one and for the fuel that it goes through i think i'd much rather have something a bit quicker, plus not really the most practical..
Don't really fancy an Impreza as there literally seems to be thousands of them around here.
