Not quite a what car thread
Discussion
Sorry if this is a repost but it is a subject that has come up for the second or third time.
An old friend is now 85 years of age and drives a Rover 800. Was a very tidy car but is now in need of a variety of repairs which makes the economics doubtful.
He is not exactly a PHer but has had some nice cars over the years and still loves driving with the provision that he does take it easy and is well aware of his limitations.
He admits that his next car will be his last but then says he wants something nice, conversation turns to an XJ6! Yes, yes! I'd like dark blue with grey leather, auto and a sunroof.
Am I nuts to encourage him or is this just a bit of harmless fun!
Seems to me we could get quite a viable old Jag for around the 2K mark and one with a good history could be a more sensible choice than a clockwork Kia or something. What say you?

Just an update on the story. 'mate got us thinking in terms of a V6 when up popped a V6 Mondeo in absolutely stunning condition. 2 owners, FSH, 54K, new tyres and ticket all for under a grand.
My old pal loves it, maybe not the Jag he wanted but you can trust Ford to come up trumps with comfort and gadgets on a budget.
Fortunate because a minor knock on the Rover more or less put pay to it.

I must say that a Series 3 would have been my choice, my pal owned one in the 80's. However, with the newest of them over 20 years old now it would've needed regular fettling to keep it nice and that's a commitment we couldn't make. Mind you, at 85 years old there is a good chance of someone inheriting the car and I would much rather an old Series 3 than an old Mondeo!!
On balance, the Mondeo has all the hallmarks of a nice reliable car, absolutely mint inside and a good 8/10 outside I am sure it will do the job.
This was an interesting project to see through. With luck we will all be old drivers eventually and the reaction of his peers and younger people was "Get yourself a little car." He said that he didn't feel confident of driving a small car and some tiny automatics can be pretty miserable things at the best of times. Small cars also fetch a premium these days so I am more confident than ever that the right decision (albeit against the odds) has been made. V8' turning our thoughts to a V6 was a good move I think!
