Heard about it because Kate Middleton is on it to squeeze into her wedding dress!

Was going to try it, sounded interesting, but have been ill and not eating much anyway, so lost a fair bit of weight...not that I am suggesting that illness is a good way to lose weight, just merely stating a fact.

I'd never heard of it before so just had a search!! I want to lose the flabby bits but not the weight so much, I'm tempted to give it a go! Is it better than the Atkins diet?
I think so. Atkins is just cutting out carbs. This is starting off with a fairly extreme diet (just protein) and working back to a normal diet.

"Atkins is just cutting out carbs."

It isn't, but people seem to enjoy focussing on just the initial carb-free stage of the diet and ignore the later stages where fibrous complex carbs are gradually re-introduced.

Feel free to actually read the book and learn about the diet...or just repeat popular misconceptions.

Is this like the South Beach diet?

Sorry if I offended, I was simply highlighting that the Atkins is designed to remove one food group (obviously not forever), whereas the Dukan you are starting with just one food group and gradually increasing.

The thing with weight loss is if someone has led a crap lifestyle and ended up the size of a bus, simply changing to a correct diet will yield only gradual (read slow) results over time. We all want a quick fix, it keeps us motivated, so if this or the Atkins, or any other diet works, and works quickly, then awesome.
And when you eat normally after the diet you become twice the size!

If you deprive the body with an extreme diet when you return to something resembling normal the body rebounds as it's intended to do and ends up in a worse condition for most.

I know plenty of fat serial dieters and can only conclude its a unhealthy load of nonsense that gives folk false hope.

Precisely! But if you read about this particular diet, like I've done, then it covers that issue. Having myself once been a 'chubber' before losing 3 stones, I've only put on 9kg in the 2 years since losing the weight. I'm not overweight now but want to lose the gut for summer so I look good in my mankini!!

If this diet can help overweight people lose it AND keep it off then happy days! It'll do someone more harm being overweight for life than altering your diet in the extreme for a couple of weeks then altering it for the better for good.
I agree being over-weight is a serious health risk.

Although I've got to say you're probably in the 5% that keep it going and in truth if you control calorie intake you should be able to manage the weight, this is what 95% of dieters don't do and thats why they are over-weight when they aren't doing extreme things!

I love bad food like nearly everyone does but I've got to say just eating healthily makes me feel far better.

Mankini made me laugh btw!

Great, another diet for people to 'go on' to lose weight. If I was an avaricious, amoral I'd have me a TV infomercial selling some super new diet and make my fortune.

'OMG! Have you heard about that new diet? You can lose up to ten pounds in a single week! All you have to do is contract dysentery and stock up on big roll and hey presto!'

Eat less, move more. Aim to lose no more than two pounds / one kilo per week. If it's not working then eat less and move more. If this doesn't work then either you're not trying or you need to see your GP.

It's not easy, it's just really fking simple.

Not offended at all, it just gets a bit old hearing the same thing said about Atkins over and over. I did the diet (after reading his books fully) about 16 years ago so had to put up with people preaching to me what was wrong about it when they clearly did not know what they were talking about.

Check out the Atkins fully, you may find it isn't much different from any other high-protein/low-carb regime. He just seems to get the most stick as his diet was the most popular. Thing is he didn't even create the bloody thing, he just regurgitated and popularised the findings of medical professionals many decades earlier. smile

Not really.

The problem with just eating less on a "conventional" diet and traditional low-fat diets is that they tend to cause peaks and troughs in blood sugar. Which causes hunger pangs when the troughs come. Those diets with low carbs or selective carbs tend to promote a more stable level of blood sugar, so energy levels are more consistent and gnawing hunger less of a problem.

Just ignore the hunger, then. biggrin

Or try the GI diet.

I think the GI diet works along similar lines, doesn't it?

Not at all. Eat as much carbs as you want. The food you choose (low GI) means you don't want to eat as much. Google is your friend.

Google is your friend.
Then let me introduce you to my friend, Google.

Because I think you'll find that the GI does work in a similar way to the Atkins and South Beach diets WRT to blood sugar levels.

Which is the same with "low carb" diets which re-introduce carbs but of a low GI variety.
