Hello

I would like anyone around my age to please tell me what they are paying for their insurance and what they are driving as I want a car but these comparison websites are shocking! I'm looking into specialist insurers. I know Footman James will insure me but are HIC any good (I think they're called Herts insurance)?

Thank you all

It's not based so much on age, more about driving experience. Have you got an no claims?

At 18 I had 1 years no claims. 206 GTi 180 (Group 17) and was paying £1400 with Admiral. Lowest risk postcode, live in the country, fully comp, 5k miles per annum, both parents as named drivers.

Unusually it was cheaper than a Clio 182 to insure by some £600 while the Clio is group 16.

Renewal is due in a few weeks and they've quoted somewhere around £1000 iirc.

when I was 18 (some 18 odd years ago!!!) I had a Fester XR2i 16v (at the time a pretty hot hatch!) and was paying just under a grand a year, so with all the shoite surrounding insurance, especially for younger petrolheads, I'd say a grand is a bit of a touch!!!!

Cheapest comparison site quoted me at least twice what I ended up paying on my renewal. Not worth the bother, definitey worth trying admiral etc. direct.
I didn't get a competitive price from them, but heard a few recommendations for direct line as well.

Iv just given up. Insurance is a joke, it would be cheaper and easier to drive around without insurance and pay the fines when you get caught than pay for insurance at a young age. (Im not condoling this, just stating a fact)

Well if there was some way you could be given a penny for every time this topic has been posted this year, you'd afford it no problems

Thanks for all the feedback guys. No, I have zero ncb as only passed in jan 11. I've given up on conparison sites as they just quote random prices it seems. For example it was cheaper to insure a 2 litre capri than a 1.1 clio. However I had a good quote from footman james for an austin mini, 750 a year tpft or double that for fully comp. no mods. no parents on quote.
But old minis are pricey to buy now!
I'm thinking old golf, scirocco (though engines are a little too large for insurance reasons), perhaps a ford of some kind.
I know this topic is getting stale but it's a big thing for us young'uns! Lol.

I'm 20, paying £1700 for a GTV V6. Reasonable deals are out there if you have the patience to shop around, rather than using the lazy way out with comparison sites. Try Admiral, Bell or Elephant; they're consistently cheap for younger drivers, customer service has always been of a good standard too which is a bonus.

Rawwr if you don't like these threads then don't comment on them, it's a topic that is relevant to many people on pistonheads.

If you do a pass plus (£100) then you can save 10-20% on your premium. That's what I did 10 years ago when I passed - info might be out of date now but google it to check it out. By the way I was paying about £450 on a 1990 Mini Cooper (as a named driver on my Mums thingy). Then at 19 I bought a 2cv derived kit car (called a Falcon) and paid £110 (in my name) a year with Footman James - if you want cheap insurance buy a small engined kit car and get specialist insurance.

There's nothing random in insurance, all cars are rated according to claim history, so if you find some nice larger engined cars which you can insure for less money, then maybe you should get one (as long as you can handle it safely!)

Insurance companies are begin to load the premiums of the small engined cars which are commonly driven by young drivers, because the claims history on these cars tells them to!

So use the comparison sites, find some hidden gems which are cheap to insure, and here's the top tip from a recent thread.

Go for an excess of at least £1,000, and then purchase excess insurance. A young guy on another thread got cheap insurance on an M3 by taking a £2,500 excess, and many of us probably didn't even realise you can then insure the excess, so you end up with full cover, but it's cheaper!
