Burst tyre

I pulled into a petrol station, scuffed the front offside tyre on the pump island and 'BANG', instant deflation. Got out for a look, there was a fist sized rip in the sidewall. The woman filling her car behind me was having kittens, she thought something involving petrol had exploded
Because the V70 has one of those crappy little space saver tyres (why in Gods name? In a V70??), I had to crank up the back of the car, whip off the rear full size wheel, stick the space saver on there and then jack up the front and stick the tyre from the back on the front.
Then I filled the car with petrol and had to endure a 60 mile motorway journey home at 50 mph. Not many tyre places open at nine o'clock at night.
Tomorrow, I get a new tyre and visit a scrappy for a fifth proper wheel. Ironically this happened only a few hours after I had driven my Mondeo to the scrappy and weighed it in. I got £170 for that, minus whatever the bloody Volvo tyre will cost.

I'm still looking for a spare alloy for my V70, gotta agree a space saver in a car that big makes little sense. I presume a full size will fit if you rip out the polystyrene things under the space saver?

I think that space savers on normal cars are a massive false economy to the end user of the car - financially and practically.

Just had a look to confirm. Plenty of room for a normal wheel in there.

Eh, I did the same in my Corsa, less than 10 miles on the clock and the front tyre popped. The power steering was very different in the Corsa to the Astra I had before, so clipped the kerb round the petrol pump. Doh!

Have you used one?

I have and it did the job fine. In fact I carry Tyreweld instead of a spare nowadays, since boot space is pretty limited on my car. If I had room for a full sized spare I'd carry that though

I accept I'll probably sacrifice a tyre by using the foam but I'm fairly confident it'll get me out of trouble.

I keep a can of tyreweld in the car, in the event that my wife needs it. Quicker than the AA and gives me peace of mind. I also have a plug repair kit which I have used twice successfully.

I've been looking at replacement tyres for the V70. Bridgestone A001s seem to stand out. The present factory fit P6000 Powergys tend to understeer in damp conditions. The car lives in a cold damp part of the UK, namely, Scotland.
Any thoughts on the A001s? I can get them fitted/balanced etc. for £62.00 a corner.

Or should I really start a new thread?

I've used more than you would imagine! The vauxhall kit is the best as it is only to be used for 5/6 miles and no more according to their literature. Now what good is that when you are in the middle of nowhere? The foam kits are useless on anything but the simplest puncture (and potentially dangerous when the user has no idea and uses it to seal a sidewall puncture). Anything else and you are stranded until recovery can take you to the nearest tyre garage. So you're stuffed if it's after hours etc. I'd rather at least have a space saver

This is so true, like many years ago, when having just done a rather fast rally over the epynt stages, and won my class, without so much as putting a scratch on the car, i then managed to reverse the trailer into my GF's car outside my house............. oops, sorry love ;-)
