Buildings and Contents Insurance?
Discussion
Guys, can you tell me who you are insured with and who you'd recommend?
My lending bank has offered cover but obviously I'd like to shop around and get a few quotes to compare.
With contents insurance, I'd likely to go with a decent provider who won't sting me if I ever actually have to make a claim. I've heard the wording of the policy is crucial, I think the phrase is "like for like" as in, if I buy a £1000 MacBook Pro today 2011 and it gets nicked in a years time, they'll replace it with a 2012 MacBook Pro even though my original one would have gone down in price.

Actually I'd been looking at Hiscox who seem to have a good reputation but I don't know anyone who uses them
They seem very confident with their product and invite you to compare them with their rvials http://www.hiscox.co.uk/personal-and-home/home-ins...
Any use them and ever had to make a claim?
I've also heard good things about Chubb Masterpiece too. Anybody got any comments on these two?

It's a little more expensive, but it's worth it IMHO.
My home and contents policy with Hiscox started today so no claims as yet! They do seem to have a good reputation and unlike many other insurers they will cover my property despite its unconventional roof and don't put a £2k limit on any single valuable.
I've used AXA in the past (never had to claim though) and found them reasonably priced.

Its always advisable to get a few quotes every year, especially if insuring with Direct Line as they are inclined to give an introductory discount of upto 25% for year 1. Makes them cheap, take off the discount in year 2 and they aren't cheap.
We had the misfortune to make a couple of claims when we were insured with a company named after a northern western coastal port and the longest reigning queen of this country ( 1 for a collapsed sewer (buildings) and one for a fire (it came from the neighbours garden and destroyed various plants trees, the fence and shed and contents (builiding and contents)) and they were a nightmare even though with the sewer they were getting 75% of the costs back from our neighbours that shared it and for the fire they got 100% back from th neighbours insurance company (but only after we pushed they wanted to agree to it being act of god. They seem to be good for motoring cover but wouldn't recommend them for housing.
I know several people who insure with Hiscox (they give RICS members and others good discounts) and those who have claimed have never had a problem.

2nd Hiscox....superb service
On a night, got a bit drunk and woke up to find my watch did not work. Took it to get it repaired (£550)..Phoned Hiscox and they had the money in my account (minus the excess) within the week.
Wife lost her Rolex, bought it 5-6 years ago....needless to say that what i paid for it and the current valuation is about £2k apart, but they offered to replace it for new with very little hassle. We happened to find the original one in the end so cancelled the claim but it was such an easy process.

We're with Groupama and I can't recommend them enough.
We were burgled while were on holiday in America - rang them on the Wednesday afternoon when we got back to inform them and gave them a list of items that were missing (TVs off the wall etc).
The next day their chosen supplier called me giving me a suggestion of TVs that were suitable replacements - I had a look, asked for a similar TV (LG instead of Toshiba etc) and the first one was delivered on the Saturday morning).
They were very easy to deal with (much better than the RAC for the car insurance - car was also stolen off the drive) and we'll renew with them again. Price wise they were about £2 a month more expensive than any one else hence why we never changed from in the first place.

I'm with MoreTh>n as it was buildings cover with the house contents covered for free. I've not needed to claim - but it's more important,I think, to know how the various companies respond to a claim than whose the cheapest.
There was another thread about this recently.I'm also with MoreThan and +1 the advice above. I have had to claim on contents twice recently and they have been simply terrific.
I'm sure I could save a quid or two by hunting around, but it you need to make a claim, how much will those few quid cost you later.

I had a claim a few years ago for a garden wall that came down in a storm. MoreThan sent out an assessor as the likely cost was in excess of £2k. He came out within 2 days, took one look at the pile of rubble and authorised it immediately.I got a local Builder to do the work and MoreThan paid up within 3 days of receiving the invoice.
Top service and strangely enough my premium dropped slightly on renewal. They've been unbeatable at renewal time every year since too.

I use Liverpool Victoria and pay £200 for house and contents - they cover house up to £1M and the premium for contents doesn't change until you go over £65K. The premium is discounted slightly as we have car insurance with them, but I think it's only 5%.
With all of them - watch for little T's & C's sneaking in - this yer they said all accessible windows had to be fitted with locks and be locked when we were out. Where we live, we don't even lock the front door during the day, so that's a bit of a palava for us.
