Which silicone - or alternative?

Dow Corning is my preference. Mildew and fungus resistant, applies nicely and stays in place a lot longer than own-brand products.
This ^^ Dow Corning is one of the best, use it on a regular basis and never had a problem with it, might be a little more expensive but worth every penny over cheap/own brand stuff.A relative of mine coined the term silicone, as he pioneered much of the research into organosilicones.
It's a shame he didn't retain any rights to it.
I would go for Dow Corning stuff myself, as they still have an award each year for research into silicones in his honour.
(Perhaps we should have a famous relatives thread)

He was probably an employee so any rights/profit belonged to his employer.I think Buckminster Fullerene sounds much more interesting

This research formed the foundation for
James Franklyn Hyde’s development of the first silicon
based insulation materials at Corning Glass Works and then
Dow Corning Corp.,
As he was chair of chemistry at University College Nottingham he was nothing to do with Dow Corning as it didn't exist.
BTW he did say that what he discovered were "sticky messes of no particular use”. Bugger.

The only thing I'd say from personal experience is don't go with the cheapest stuff, like everything you get what you pay for.
...except that Dow Corning seems to be cheaper than most others.

No but I presume he was an employee of University College Nottingham so the same applies.Wiki says that at that time it was in Shakespeare Street, so that building probably became part of Trent Polytechnic. However UCN moved to Beeston and became Nottingham University.
