just make sure you take it off when you've finished using it.
Was chatting to an 'aquaintance' the other day who couldn't understand why the 'economy' on his piece of crap X3 had gone down since his skiing trip (and yes, he looks SOOOOOO feckin stupid with the 'panda eyes, then again he is a complete c**t).
Looked out of the pub window, "You still have your roofbox on you utter tw*t" "Oh, would that make a difference?" He's been driving around with it on since mid feb.
Just the sort of c*** that buys an X3 I guess.

Why? So I can lug around the extra space that I need for maybe 3 weeks for the entire year instead?
No thanks.
OP, as usual, you get what you pay for. I forked out for the top of the line Thule in the States about 6 years ago. It's served us well and still works as it did when new. A little faded and scratched up, but patina adds value, right?
I would look at the long and tall, versus the short and wide editions. We had the latter briefly as a freebie, and it wasn't nearly as useful.

Roof boxes, why not just by a bleedin car that is up to your needs. Nothing makes me chuckle more than seeing something like an Astra with a bleedin shed on it`s roof, by an Insignia Estate or something similar ffs.
Mate of mine has a 1 series BMW that has had a box on since day one because there is nowhere to put the pram, should have bought a 3 series touring then.

Why buy a larger, more expensive car than you need for 48 weeks of the year, when you can use a roofbox for the few weeks holiday and spend the bulk of the year driving a more appropriate (sportier?) car?I use an atera box for a few weeks each year when my family do beach holidays. It is ideal for carrying wetsuits, bodyboards, buckets etc. without filling the car with sand and sea-water.
As before, I would recommend a long thin box rather than short fat, and dual sided opening is really useful.

because people are SO lazy or stupid they don't take them off.I use an atera box for a few weeks each year when my family do beach holidays. It is ideal for carrying wetsuits, bodyboards, buckets etc. without filling the car with sand and sea-water.

another thumbs up for a Thule...think its an atlantic 600 whatever that means. They wear well, no real additional wind noise and swallows a ton of gear. I never understand the resistance to them...they do what they do well and are secure. Gold clubs shouldnt be an issue..at least a couple of bags should go in no trouble.

So because some people are lazy or stupid that doesn't mean that active/intelligent people shouldn't choose to use them for a few weeks each year instead of buying a car which is larger than they normally need.dowahdiddyman said:

What if it's already a big Estate and that still isn't enough? Mate of mine has a 1 series BMW that has had a box on since day one because there is nowhere to put the pram, should have bought a 3 series touring then.
We have a V70 that has to fit 4 people, a big Dobermann and all the luggage to go with.
A roof box really helps for those longer stints.
I have a roof box and agree with the comments of why have a much larger car for most of the year when the box on my 3 series saloon suffices when needed.
Takes minutes to put on and seconds to remove.
Storage is a bit of a problem though and currently it is leaning against the fence in the back garden.
There is a numpty around the corner with a Freelander 2 plus a roof box on permanently the wrong way round. So much for the aerodynamic shape.
