Has anyone used such a material (Cooltek etc ?).

Having replaced my cat's with downpipes I recall the cat's were wrapped in such material, presumably to keep the heat down in the engine bay (particularly N/S).

What, Why, and How Much ?

cheers

I use it on the V8S, 50' x 2" roll is enough to do both sides. Once it's been cooked it is quite brittle so easy to damage when you're working on the engine, so don't expect it to last forever.

I used that stuff on a pair of new mild steel manifolds I bought for my SEAC back in 96/97, with the hope of keeping the heat down and getting more horses. 1500 miles later they were scrap as they had distorted so much due to the temperatures involved. The round sections had gone oval and the welded areas cracked. They were blowing very badly and great sheets of oxidised steel fell off when I removed the bandages.

It was funny how afterwards, people would say, " Cor, you don't want to be doing that on a road car, ok for the track though"

hmm... not such a good idea for keeping the heat out of the engine bay then !

You do hear reports of problems from time to time, usually about corrosion rather than thermal stress though. I suspect it might depend how much heat is going through the exhausts and also how thick the exhaust is (stainless exhausts are often made of thinner material). However, I've used this stuff on the V8S for the last 90,000 miles with no problems. I've benefited from much lower underbonnet temperatures and noticeably fewer component failures round the engine bay.

Ta,

Can be disastrous on a motorbike being more exposed to the elements. It gets soaked and takes much longer to dry out, so rots the exhaust double-quick.

Also the thermal wrap isn't very robust and I can't see it lasting very long on a bike. I wonder if ceramic coating might be a better bet on a bike?
