We've got an 18 hour stopover (6PM to 12AM) on the way back from Oz in June, rather than booking into an airport hotel I was thinking it might be worth booking in somewhere in the Marina Bay region just to get a brief glimpse of the place. Any recommendations for hotels\places to eat in that area? Budget of say £150 for the hotel and £100 for dinner for 2

I would have said Orchard Road for hotels (Marina Bay if you want to go modern and posh) and eat on the street from the hawker's wagons in Chinatown. Great atmosphere and the food is absolutely brilliant and costs peanuts. The experience of being there is amazing - it's just bustling.

Spend the rest of your budget on tat, or go to the Four Floors of wes for some ladyboy entertainment (also on Orchard Road!)

Thanks all, I'll have a look for something on Orchard Road. I think we'll give the ladyboys a miss, it's not the mrs scene....or mine of course!smile

Are you sure you have 18 hours, not 6, or have you got your AM/PM mixed-up?

I recently stayed a couple of nights at the Grand Hyatt on Scotts Rd, nr. the crossroads with Orchard Rd and the new Ion Centre (sp?). It's not much to look at from the outside, in fact it looks 'orrible from the outside (!), but the rooms are lovely and the service is great.

There are loads of good hotels around Marina Bay

I'd avoid Orchard Road area, not much point given the time that you are there unless you like busy shopping malls, it's pretty soul-less.

You should be able to get a room at Marina Bay Sands for 150, which will give you access to the rooftop and the best views in Singapore. Plenty of restaurants around there and the casino/shopping mall across the road as part of the complex is convenient and impressive.

Otherwise there is the Pan Pacific, Swissotel Stamford (some rooms getting on a but good bar on the 70th and good location), Fullerton etc all around the bay.
