Selling this table- I can't for the life of me remember what the type of decoration on it is called, and google in this case isnt helping me. Can PH fill in the blanks?
How would you describe it? The decor is different wood set into the main surface. T

Thanks in advance!

I think that table is of Italian origin and about 10 years old. Most came from a company called Novalinia.

Better ones are veneer and marquetry on MDF and then spray lacquered. Then somebody found out that you could screen print the pattern onto MDF and with a nice thick coat of lacquer it is very difficult to tell the difference!

We sold hundreds of them back then and with either finish they are a good, usable piece of kit.

Cheers! Not an MDF bottom though, its proper wood all the way through. I suspect older than 10 years too as the guy I got it off is a friend and he had it since I met him in 2000-ish and his dad for a time before that. Its on eBay now anyway smile

I think the term is inlay for furniture. Marquetry refers to pictures made out of veneer.

Dave, the fact that it's got grain on the bottom doesn't mean it it solid wood. If it is veneered on the top surface they but another veneer on the bottom to 'balance' things and prevent it warping.

A guide to what it is can be seen by the sides being painted because there's no end grain to show.

No matter, the tops last forever and the only problem is the plinth staying stable. Is it one plinth or 2?

There are a lot of collectors of this range, sideboards and display cabinets etc. Pity there's no set of chairs to go with it. We still get call for them now but the cost of getting them from Italy has gone through the roof!
