In the middle of moving house and the gearbox on our RR L322 '03' has gone tits up, it's been playing up for a while so knew it was on the cards, now something went 'snap' & its stuck in fourth frown just sods law its happened right in the middle of a move rolleyes

Anyone have any ideas on where to source a recon gearbox? and an indy in the south that might take on the work? doesn't matter where as we'll be getting it shipped via AA anyway.

It's quite common, is it the diesel or petrol? Just take it to an auto transmission specialist and get a rebuild. Should cost around £2k.

thanks chaps smile

its a petrol '03' 4.4, been going for a while to be honest, started overheating 2 yrs ago eek had the oil ways flushed through & changed the G/box oil filter, also flushed the main radiator as sludge collects in the bottom and thats where the cooling for the gearbox runs through (apparently), I'm surprised it hung on as long as it did really, probably done 20k miles in it since the first symptoms, been using it a manual and keep revs higher for improved flow.

Last night I changed from 3rd > 4th which resulted in a clunk & then a 'Transmission Failsafe' mode was displayed leaving it stuck in 4th frown

this morning all is back to normal whilst cold, changing gear etc but a slight grating sound on overun so something has let go I think.

Liszt - tried Ashcroft but they'll only supply trade frown do you have a contact there by chance??

Do you dabble on Ebay? Item no: 360360259883 for a refurb box + torque convertor @ £1550 delivered. I've only ever used this chap to supply the odd peripheral part so I've no idea what he's like for the big lumpy stuff, but his adverts always seem pretty open.

Thanks GKP but I'm currently at £1299 +vat for a rebuilt unit with 6mths warranty for parts and labour from these guys http://www.newautofit.co.uk/

anyone know them?

had a few other quotes of similar values, best one for piece of mind I think would be this: £1599+ vat with 2yr unlimited mileage warranty.

I'm quite surprised at some of the good offers tbo, think I'll renew the oil cooler and main radiator at the same time.

Hi Pvapour

There is a guy on Range rover net http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/ Who overhauls them for a small charge. RRPhil his his username great bloke helped me out with mine, you will have to remove it yourself and get it to him.
It will probably be a good idea to get the torque converter overhauled at the same time as these are prone to failure I had mine overhauled for £150.

If an autobox has gone bang you MUST replace the torque converter as it will be full of crap which won't help your new box when it gets washed into it!
All lines, coolers, ect must be thoroughly flushed out.

started this morning & everything works as it should, obviously because its cold scratchchin

drive for 1/2 hour & it goes to high rev/high flow mode then 1/2hr more driving results in the same loud clunk and stuck in 4th again 'transmission failsafe'

I'm thinking the failsafe mode is being activated by more heat than can be handled by (for want of a better description) 'the increased rev mode' the latter being the occasional mode we've been experiencing for the last couple of years.

The increase in ambient temperature at the moment is probably creating this different scenario so think I'm going to replace the Main Radiator and the oil cooler to see if cures things without changing the entire gearbox, I'd replace these items anyway if we fitted an entire gearbox so nothing to loose, will keep this updated as it might help someone else.

advice on torque converter noted, thanks smile

The problem with your senario is if the box does go bang the new oil cooler and pipework will be filled with debris. Go on to range rover net http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/ they will help you diagnose the problem? Have you had any gerabox codes read?
