I am currently looking at changing the induction system on the MGF as the standard airbox is quite restrictive, but am confused on the best placement of the new air filter. Would it be better to:

A - Have the enclosed filter close to the throttle body and then have a cold air feed running from the side vent
B - Have the filter low down and open in the side vent and then have long pipework going to the throttle body
C - Makes no difference?

take the heap to a scrappy and get another one off the road before it closes a motorway with a blown headgasket while trying to push 90 in lane 3

Doesn't make any difference where the filter is as far as I know.

Just try and feed it some cold air, so its not sucking up heaps of warm air. If you get onto the Rover/MG forum, there might some better description for you, and even maybe a "how to" guide to make your own piping to lead the cold air through.

Why contribute?

He didn't ask for an imbecile to mock his car, just some intelligent advice about it. Obviously well above your means...

I would be looking to do A from your list as if you go with the filter low in the intake duct its going to get soaked with rain fired in to the duct as you drive (not a good thing)

try and find a less restrictive airbox with a quality panel filter and duct feed that from
the side intake.

I put mine directly onto the throttle body & it worked just fine.

From experience with a ZR, and the same issue I found the best set-up to be as follows:

Pipercross viper kit (or BMC eqivalent) for about £180. Then you get plenty of flexi to route to the car body exit for cold air, the enclosed filter can be positioned further up with bracketry mods. What I did extra, was to source some silicone hosing of the right diameter, and then place that between the throttle body and the pipercross kit, thus moving the enclosed filter away from the hottest part of the engine.

Worked a treat.

In 3years of K series ownership I ran 7 different filter set-ups, and 5 exhaust set-ups, the final one was the best by a country mile, which was:

52mm throttle body off a 160bhp model. Silicone hose from TB to piper kit (70odd mm I believe). Piper cross kit piped to front bumper (low down, with steep incline to avoid rain water issues). 4branch manifold fron Janspeed. then all exhaust system from Exhausts UK at sheffield including sports cat. Made a lovely noise, and went like the clappers for what it was.
