Hi Volvo20, just got a 650 sport for the next couple of weeks to do me before my new car comes. Real nice car, its an auto but great combo with that V8. I think you might find with the 630, that you`ll have to drive it hard to make it go. Torque rich V8 the way to go!
This car will be for sale in 2 weeks.....

I am biased owning a 650 cab but I really don't understand the desire for a 630i manual. These are GT cars, not sports cars and exclusivity aside, you would be better ragging a 335i around a track than a 630i.
Real world performance difference between the 630i and 650i is more significant than the numbers suggest and the sound of the 650 is in a different league. Whilst you will buy a manual 630i cheaply, just remember it will be like trying to offload toxic waste when you come to sell it.
To sum up, the 6 series is a great car and I have loved every minute of mine, but it is a GT that is perfectly suited by the auto box and if your looking for something that is eally sporty then look elsewhere, the 630i manual is not it

Have just got a 630i coupe and I don't think you will be disappointed especially if you go for the facelift model with paddles, I prefer the sound of a revvy six myself and if you're anything like me will be driving around with the window open especially as you wind it up. The 630 certainly feels well balanced in corners but it is no M3 on back roads which is more down to its width and length than anything else. I hope this helps it's a great car.

What kind of MPG are you guys seeing in your 645 - 650's ?
Some real world MPG figures are quoted here - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...Webber3 said:

But I thought the whole point of this post and the advice you were seeking was because......volvo20 said:

Well thats my only realistic choice isn't it? I dont want an automatic, but I do want a 650i. The purpose of this post is for peoples opinions on the matter, and hopefully some experiences of either.
Yes that is the only realistic choice. I have lots of experience on the matter but it seemed to me you didn't want to listen from your response..........thegreatdogwood said:

I've just put a desposit down on a 2007 MANUAL 550i M Sport touring, can't wait!!
I have a E39 540i auto and the engine does suit an auto box very well. But now I'm going down to one car I want my only car to be a manual.
Can you let us know how you get on with the clutch and gearbox? I suspect its the same fitted in the 6 series. I've not managed to find any owners online, so all's I have to go off is journalist reviews, which say they are rubbish

(not sure how a £60k car can have a poor transmission but hey ho)
t , you charmer It would be wonderful if people could advise on what to look out for on the 6 series. Also lurking and the 650 seems down right economical compared to my 1999 740i (could be a serious case of man goggles) which is nearing the end of it's days.
P.s. I checked the rear seats for size and they are tight even for little people. Luckily the rear seats are just about the correct size for our 2 cocker spaniels.

All info welcome!
P.s. I am in the automatic only club, as my occasional chauffeur (SWMBO) will only drive an auto.

Another lurker here interested in the 6 Series transmission question and I also have an E39 540i Sport that I might want to move on later in the year - congratulations to the new winner of the 550i Touring (best shape IMHO)!
I would be interested in the 645i or 650i and would try to get the 650i as prices keep falling and it appears to be the better package from what I have read. But like the OP, I'm not entirely sure about having an auto again. Don't get me wrong, I like my auto and it suits the v8 in my E39 perfectly so can only imagine how much better it would be in the 6 Series but what I would really like is something with paddle shifters like the 335d has. The only thing I can see in the 6 Series is SMG and that's not like a standard auto with a torque converter...does anyone have experience of the SMG for real world driving e.g. in town?
Am I correct in thinking that the standard auto box in the 650i/645i does not have paddle shifters and it was not an option?
Many thanks in advance

Its these kind of threads which remind me what the major problem with the human race is, we read into things what we want to see, and whats not actually there.

You really might encourage more people to try to help you if you showed a bit more appreciation, as there is NONE actually there in any of your posts.........thegreatdogwood said:

Completely agree with thegreatdogwood, fantastic cars perfect as a long distance GT, pretty exclusive still when compared to the amount of BMW's on our roads and can be made to hustle along pretty quickly whether it be the V8 burble you want or a straight 6 zing on B roads. The auto box doesn't shift too badly in manual once you've got some time racked up using it that way and for everyday motoring and when TOH needs to drive the auto is perfect.
