I have nothing to do with that site nor do I have any vested interest am just highlighting the brillient annual event.
Note IF you have never been before get there really early i.e. on the Fri/Sat get into the queue for 10am latest and then leave whenever you like as if you decide to turn up and want to get in for 1-3pm... you will have little chance as its one in one out and trust me hardly any leave then.
A great event.
Oh another thing its cash only.... and if you leave to get more... back of the queue so take plenty of cash in fact take double better to be safe than sorry.
The food is amazing - Hog roast/spit roasts, Game pies, 24" bratvursts etc etc... oh and a tokan veggie option (which Ive tried and it honestly is tasty).
Evening entertainment on the Friday night is great - proper swing bands music that everyone can enjoy and most get up for a jig.
Toilets well... what do you expect massive usage so go before or early on. they are better than most night clubs Ive been to.
500+ beers 300+ cidars & perrys, Englis wines, Belgium beers mmm for those seeking stronger stuff.
There are a number of games inside too old fashioned pub games which are good.
Take a bottle of water with you and suntan lotion - oh and make sure your drinking hat is on.
A populat game is to try to do the alphabet A-Z in half pints over the course of the day as it forces you to go to different parts and try out different beers - some will be really poor (very few) others very drinkable some stunning to the point you get on a mission with your preferred.
I'm aiming for Friday & Sat all day.

I'll be there Wednesday evening - It really is an excellent event, a fine choice of ale and as OP said, excellent choice of "solids" too.
I only realised this lunchtime its doing a Wed evening opening too. This will be my 11th year of attending...Ive yet to manage a Sunday - however been every other time and usually make two (Fri evening & all day Sat = Sunday is painfull & smelly due to ale's and lovely food).
First year I went Friday night the guy who always doesnt the Hogroast was hanging drunk (we were not far off) but resulted in the meatiest & most crackling Id ever had & as every year his grub is really top notch (a highlight for me - I try to have 3 a day when there proper absorbing the booze grub).

Last few years we have queued for 3 hours to get in, but decided that it just isn't worth it this year. However tegh Beer and Jazz festival over the other side of the bridge in July August is far more chilled, and still has a great selection of ales.
Well - difference to the Real ale & Jazz festival is c£20 a ticket v £6
7pm till 11pm v 11am-11pm
Some reason no beer over 5% is allowed to be sold until 9pm in the Jazz festival whereas in Beer festival everything is available from 11am
Food very different
Music is very taste specific - some of the bands Ive heard there are truely not my thing whereas others are pretty good. One band I did think excellent but then discovered they were being backed by Scientology - cannot remember the name of the band but they dressed in white suits and part of the act was the lead Sax climbing up the posts of the tent.
No que/20-30 people
Ticketed v unticketed.
Capacity.
At the end of the day its nice to have both - Ive not been to the Jazz one for a few years as overseas but if here and am free then I do go.
I tend to find with the Ale festival I bump into people Ive not seen for many many years (or spoken to) and its nice to catch up.
I guess one other thing is I quite like the fact you can have ale's mid afternoon
If you're not near Reading give the superb http://www.paisleybeerfestival.org.uk/ a try. I'm going Friday with a buch of folk and it's great.
