Mature ladies & gentlemen with private plates on small cars

Out and about today and i saw a Fiat 500 with HAB1T (nice) on it, followed a Jazz with XCY1 on it (extra nice for being a local reg) and an OLD Polo (mid 80s) with YCY 22 on it...
There is something perversely good about having a little runabout with a properly tidy plate on it.
I'm not a big fan of private plates generally, particularly the ones that "spell" words or names (usually badly) but i am a sucker for neat, non age related, short registrations.

I commute 40 miles across Cambs/Norfolk countryside, and there are so many of these. Proper old money, farmers who've had the plates from new.

There's an old Honda I used to see with 5 EGA, and a Jazz I see most days with a single letter, single number.

With the exception of the polo they weren't snotters...
They clearly gave the impression of cars that were chosen for their size and they had just put "their" plate on it. I thought it was quite nice really

I'm not usually a fan of flash plates (Bentley or Rolls on age related = class!) but I love to see ££££ numberplates on a cheap car.

I usually assume they're there as an alternative to retention. Or the plate's been in the family for years and years and the current owner doesn't want to sell it but don't care about flash cars either.

Mostly the kind of people who have properly expensive old plates are those who don't feel the need to scream how rich they are by having a flashy car to run down to their local Countrywide stores.

I think its a combination of insurance costs rising dramatically with age, and smaller less powerful cars are easier to handle when you are mentaly slowing down.

I have known a guy in his 90's, fronting his insurance through one of his children, who was living abroad.
