It may sound like a dumb question; but the previous owner of my car never did! He did live in slough, however hehe but he said to me that he has never displayed it, as people cut the hoods open to steal the tax discs. I've owned the car 2 months now and haven't been bothered to display the tax disc, and haven't encountered any trouble with it. He said that due to the fact police etc can just see from the numberplate check system thing that it is taxed, that they don't bother fining for it.

Anyone else do this?

You're risking a fine for not displaying it, a ticket through the post from a camera van, or a ticket on the windscreen from a traffic warden.

Easier and cheaper to buy a tamper proof taxdisc holder and stick it to the windscreen.

The fine for not displaying a valid tax disc is the same as the fine for not having a valid tax disc. Don't risk it - it'll cost you more than a hood if you get a fine. wink

What point is there in stealing a tax disc?
I have mine on view and I'm not worried about leaving my car with the roof down.

1. A holder that if you remove it damages the paper disc so that it's rendered useless - it has written warnings on it to advise and deter.
2. No idea, my tax disc is in a silly big chavvy alu-look Ripspeed holder so that there's zero chance of it blowing away when the roof's down smile

They can only be cashed in by the person named on the V5, can't they? I've even done it recently and I can't remember the process! getmecoat

It'd be a hell of a lot more than £40 on mine, my car's £255 pa!

I once had my tax disc stolen when my Lotus Elan was parked in Rhyl but that was some 35 years ago (gulp!) and it was much easier to just undo the roof on the Elan than it is on the MX5. Still, I've nursed a grievance against Rhyl ever since!

I forgot to change over tax discs on my last car (car was still taxed), only got a warning sticker from a traffic warden, no fine so not sure if traffic wardens actually hand out fines.

Pretty sure they don't check it. My car is parked on a busy main road that is constantly patrolled by traffic wardens (parking permits are needed) and it has been left all day Mon-Fri for months without so much as a notice.

I'll look into a tamper proof tax disc holder, ta.

You get one as part of the membership pack if youi join the owners club and I think they send you a replacement if you renew. Unfortuntely my tax renewal date and membership renewal date are different, so I'm currently using a normal magnetic holder. Having read a post above, I think I may make a colour photocopy, put it in the car and keep the original safe.

This is true....I've just joined the owners club and fortunately my tax is due at the end of the month (toddles off to renew tax while he remembers).

I got a parking ticket recently, and they quoted the reference number on my tax disc, so they do check it, not sure if they can fine (for no tax disc) you if not though!?
