Considering a 968
Discussion
Im looking in to getting a 968 Sport (if i can find one.)
What sort of MPG do these average ??
on the basis that my current car has 3.0 litres, 6 cylinders and two turbos , and averages about 18 -19 mpg.
My guess would be about 25 -26 Mpg for the 968???
what kind of cost are 6,000 and 12,000 mile services??
Im looking in to spending about 10K on a car to use as my daily driver + posibly a few trackdays. but i need to cut the cost of my petrol bill, so need a car that can average more than 25 mpg.
Is the 968 a realistic option on a limited budget ?

Humm....
yes see what you mean about the purchase price.
just done a bit more research, 10K may be a little optiistic.
although i have seen a few 968s advatised for less than that. there were a few recently advertised for around the 9 - 10K mark (may have been LHD, cant remember)
would cars under this price be a false economy to buy ? i.e. would i have to expect big repare bills ?

You may find a good lhd 968 for £10k..but don't even bother looking for a lhd sport,
The sport was a UK only edition, basically non M030 clubsport with rear seats and a couple of other goodies.
If you can spend a little more, get a good car and look after it, you will certainly get your money back.
Look out for timing chain and waterpump overhauls, a recent clutch would also be a good idea. get a sorted car and it will be an investment. I know as I made a good return on mine

If budget is fixed I'd probably be tempted to go for a good S2 for about 7-8k, or even a 944 turbo which is a fair bit faster, but a bit more wild.
I currnetly have a 968 CS and 944 turbo and to be honest the latter is much faster. The 968 did cost just over 10k but I think I could easily spend 2k on it. Nothing is absolutely necesary needed but clutch, brakes and steeering could probably be improved.
Both will deliver more than 20 mpg if you don't go mad - the 968 probably late 20s
Good luck

For the 10K you are looking to spend I suggest you import your own LHD from Germany. I have privately imported a 993 a few years back and more recently a 996TT and I recomend LHD to anyone in the UK. If a person has any issues with LHD on UK roads they should not be behind the wheel of a Porsche! The savings make a huge difference to what you can buy. DVLA give good info packs on how to import and it realy is straightforward to do yourself, though perhaps time is an issue. LHD Club sports are respected and very well maintained in Germany - 968 Sport was not avail' there as it was mainly for the UK market. Try www.Mobile.de which is an excellent site that puts Autotrader.co.uk to shame.
Good hunting.
Good hunting.
I had a LHD 968 coupe for 1 year and 12k miles. Great car. It needs servicing every 12k miles and these cost around £300 from a specilist. The car has some achilles heels-1)cam teath can get worn. 2) pinion bearings in the gearbox can fail 3) Heater valves can fail 4) Caliper plates can become rusty.
Good ones are becoming very rare

And what's more it's my old car

Joel is also a top bloke to deal with so you don't have to put up with my attitude to punters prodding my motors...

Slightly off topic but on the subject of 968 pinion bearings failure in the gearbox - I believe the gears and casings (though not the whole box) are the same as on the Audi S2 Coupe - the 240bhp quattro replacement that came out in the early 90s. Repair as this type and save yourself a few £££.
I think everyone should have a 968 at least one time in their lives. When I'm finally done with my S2 cab and my '83 928, perhaps I'll get one in the stable. Technologically advanced, for sure, but no more so than lots of other "more modern" cars these days. The variocam feature seems to be fully worked out. Fast and stylish !

Well I took the plunge and bought Scottster's old car today from RSJ.
Big thanks to Scottster for talking through the car's history - always great to speak to the last owner especially when it's a fellow Pistonheader.
Also must mention that Joel at RSJ is a top bloke - seems like a genuine guy unlike most of the dealers I've dealt with.
Hoping I may get the car in time for Le Mans...
