Well its happened, my first break down, although was expecting it as the starter motor hasn't sounded to well the last week.

After a clean today thought i would take the car somewhere local "luckily" for some photos, got there took some photos, repositioned car with a little drive around the park, stopped some more photos, hit the start button and whizzzz motors turning but the solenoid not kicking the gear into place.

One of the memories i have always had was breaking down in my dads austin ambassador on holiday in wales and the RAC man hitting the starter motor and the car starting, which i have put into practice one of the 25t cranes at work just a bit bigger, so thought the theory good, although access is a little difficult on the cerb.

Got my dad to come out with a long piece of wood that i could rest of the starter and hit from above the airboxes, still never worked.

Unfortunately had to pull the cerb with the jeep and jump started in second, worked fine, although the drive home was nerving as not to stall, not that i have before except when learning to drive.

So need a new starter. options are:

Can you point me in the right direction of where to get a new solenoid from?

Not sure where to get just a solenoid from but you can get starter motor refurb kits. Whether or not these contain a solenoid I figure it would still be a good idea whilst you have the starter out.

I got a starter refurb kit from ebay a little while ago that contained the solenoid and brushes. Only cost around £50 and fixed my starter fine. Unfortunately I cant see any on there now ,but the seller was "-petrol-head-" on ebay, it might be worth contacting them to see if they can supply a kit.

Just got the refurbishment kit off of eBay for £55 delivered. With the solenoid and gear. Worth a try for 50 quid I think. Better than £300 for a new one. Interestingly my car has already had a starter motor in it's 20k mileage life. Have to check tomorrow about a direct feed using a relay from the battery. Would this be worth doing as well whilst the starter is removed?

Could just need a clean inside, and then a lights lube. I did mine 3 years ago, still working

they also do the gear assembly and I think full refurbs.

My starter was just whinning when I pressed the starter button, I thought it was the solenoid at first, it turned out to be the gear slipping, it contains a little clutch for safety reasons. £50, an hours work, a few sparks and all has been well for two years. ( Hopefully it will stay in working order. )

Yeah mines just spinning at present. But as it's got to come out having the kit to refurb it at hand will be useful even if it doesn't need it as it will be one of them things that if you didn't buy it you'd need it

Think the best solution is to buy another cerb, park it next to prescent cerb and just take bits off when it goes wrong. You got to love em cos you do a days worth of jobs on it and think"ahhh all done" then go to move it and hey presto another problem.Have decided to put a white board in the garage with a jobs to do list (this will be a big board)

This is the kit I bought recently as my starter also died.....not sure if it was solely a quirk on my 4.2 but the spring with the 2 prongs wasn't right for my starter....so check old versus new before you spend ages scraping your knuckles putting the starter back in, only to take it out and strip it down again. I ended up using the new clutch / solenoid but the original spring & piston......works perfectly now - happy summer driving days are here smile

When I did mine all I did was deactivate the alarm/unlocked the doors via the key fob, raised the bonnet, then disconnected the battery......not sure if there is a 'proper' way or time to do it but it worked for me

Well managed to get the starter out without much bother, removed the solenoid and tested the resistant of the coil and nothing, tested the new solenoid i was sent and nothing, so so much for that, but guess at least the starter is out, and i have managed to re wrap the battery cables, just got to wait for the seller to get back to me, but since its another bank holiday may be awhile, so no cerb driving a a little while longer.

Think its always the way when everything i going smoothly something always goes wrong.

Not a too bad job doing the start for a first timer, come out easily and is pretty good for access once a few things have been removed.
