997 GT3/RS depreciation?
Discussion
I'm toying with the idea of buying a Gt3, but would be buying for the long haul (5 years +) so wanted to see what peoples view is on their depreciation.
997 Mk1s are now selling for c60k, but 996s still fetch c40k.
Would it be worth spending the extra for an RS?
Where do you see both price wise in 5 hrs time?
ALSO WHICH IS "THE" GT3 to buy? (apart from the current RS as I can't afford that...)

Best GT3 apart from the current RS...? I'd get the Gen.2 GT3 clubsport with PCCBs for my usage which is a weekend toy with a few track days and and an annual pan European road trip.
However if depreciation is a factor then it's worth considering Chris Harris' view that the gen 1 is currently a bargain as it's 95% the car the gen 2 is but at two thirds of the price.
But then again, that last 5% will never come cheap :-)

given the choice i'd be going for a 996 variant, even if money didn't come into it
sorry I know that doesn't match your thread title but they are worth investigating if you haven't already
good shout.. our kid bought a 6RS in 2008 for a smidge over £50k with 20k on the clock.. it now has 30 odd on the clock.. depreciation?..!sorry I know that doesn't match your thread title but they are worth investigating if you haven't already
and for me by far and away the best 911 to wear the badge.

Hi it's the Evo April issue. The one where he drives the Mclaren. It's in the Fast Fleet section where he writes about the 7.1 GT3 he is modding: "Now is the time to wax lyrical about the value these first-generation GT3s currently offer. At around £60k retail, they must be the sweetest sports-car deal around, offering 9.5/10ths of the ability of the very latest 3.8-litre version for two-thirds of the price. If anything, I think the 3.6-litre motor is a little sweeter at the top-end, even if it doesn't have the same low-to-midrange pull. The cabin does feel dated, though, and I really miss the latest PCM3 nav and iPod jobby". Edited by Skittles001 on Thursday 21st April 20:27

Safe bet that if you buy wisely, you won't loose a lot in 5 hours....997 Mk1s are now selling for c60k, but 996s still fetch c40k.

All the indicators point to 8k pa up to 4 years, then 5k pa up to 8 years, when they seem to "stick/slow down"?
For example, my car is approaching 4 years old, 91k new, worth about 59k for the sake of argument?
Say I keep it another 4 years, so worth about 39k? This seems to equate to the prices being asked for 2003/4 cars now?
That's what I am expecting, but only time will tell - remember, if you buy/sell to the trade, there could be an extra 5k "hit" at either end of the period?
As to which one to buy - TBH, I could be swayed by the 6RS argument, as I would prefer the car to be "set" in one suspension mode, which you learn to live with and drive accordingly (as per my Exige). The PASM is starting to irritate slightly, as you need to always remember to switch to sport, every time you decide to press on. If you don't, you get rewarded with horrible understeer. But, driving constantly in sport can become tiresome, as it is very firm (handles well though). I don't think the GT3 really needs it and it should have been kept for the cooking models?

What about the 997.1 RS?
Go and drive them both. Its quite shocking how different they are.If you want feel, a car for the circuit and raw thrills then 996RS it is. The 97 is better for the road as an all rounder but less collectable and imo less special as used values indicate.

Less collectible??? As used values indicates??? Sorry I don't get it here - puzzled by the logic behind this statement. If you want feel, a car for the circuit and raw thrills then 996RS it is. Please explain how you got to this conclusion
A 97 rs.1 with around 20k miles is now 70-75k, currently heading south
A 96rs with the same mileage is now 65k, i.e. Not much less for a car that is 4 or 5 years older, and currently heading NORTH
They will pass eachother very soon IMO. In the 996 range there was only one RS, not 2 or 3, and it was totally devoid of nannies or electronics. We might not see a car l ike that from porsche ever again. Only my opinion though so feel free to disagree as much as you like. Time will tell.
As for collectable. Drive both and have a good look round both and read up on what makes them an RS over their GT3 countparts and you will hopefully get the picture.
The 97 RS.1 is the right car for many many people so don't think I am knocking it. But its a different car to the 96rs and the facts need stating for someone going shopping.

Going slightly o/t - is the 6RS out of the box, a better car for the job (it was intended for) than the 7.1RS?
Back on topic - surely numbers produced/left in existence also has a factor to play in the 6RS being more collectible?
They were intended for different jobs and a changing market IMO so hard to answer that one ... They probably both fulfill their brief very very well.Back on topic - surely numbers produced/left in existence also has a factor to play in the 6RS being more collectible?
