Is Chain Reaction Cycles still fraudulent?

I'm looking to buy a couple of items for my bike from CRC, but I'm wondering if there's still the risk of having credit card details used fraudulently after buying from them.

Any ideas what the situation is now?

They assured those of us affected that they have robust security measures in place. However nowhere is ever 100% safe. I would pay through PayPal as an extra layer of protection if you're concerned.

My card had to be cancelled after using them but I've had no contact at all from them before during or after the event. For that reason alone I won't be using them ever again whether or not the problem is solved.

Never used them and probably never will as they must surely have the worst rep when it comes to internet security.

I had my credit card details used fraudulently, I contacted CRC after I read it could have been due to their security, they sent me an email and also gave me a £30 voucher, I suspect they have tightened security up now as it is not good for their business!

I have bought many times from them over the past few years with no issues, so I'll cut them some slack, they did admit they had an issue and they have rectified it, they say.

I have recently bought again from them, but this time I used Paypal.

As with any on-line purchase, be careful, always use a credit card, not a debit card, you then have protection from the card company. Never leave you payment details with the site.

Did you contact them to tell them about the suspected fraud? If not how would they know? Maybe send them an email as it will help them sort the problem.

I could never fathom why the fraudsters had targetted a bike shop.

I've used CRC before, during and after all this has come to light and have never had a problem, I usually use paypal as payment though.

I didn't email them but I'm sure they knew. I was one of many. It was all over several internet forums at the time as well, including posts by CRC themselves about the issues. That's my point really - why should I need to email them? Surely they should have been proactive and contacted me?

Just for the PayPal lovers, fraud runs at 0.17%

Fraud through Visa credit cards runs at 0.05% and Mastercard at 0.08%

Yes they new they had a security issue, but how would they know that your card had been compromised? Not every CRC customer has had issues. Again I suggest you contact them as they will probably like to know about any fraud, it may help them to stop the same thing happening again.

to give a slightly different taint, I know of a few online retailers who were hacked and didn't say a word to their customers. It's not a rare occurrence for credit card details to be pinched - at least CRC owned up and allowed customers to take remedial action!

CRC only seemed to admit to having a problem when the sheer volume of post on internet fora meant they couldn't do much else. In the early stages of the problem I don't think they admitted to much (understandably I guess). There was a thread on here discussing the problem:

I was probably wrong to say I'll never use them again. If I'm looking for something they sell and their price is right I'd probably give them a second chance, but I wouldn't use my main credit card this time. The hassle of changing the number everywhere I had it registered was just too much of a pain.

My bank statement came through on Thursday and I was pleased to see that my card doesn't appear to have suffered. I literally purchased on my debit card then popped onto PH and read about the problems.....

When I worked at Parcel Force in the warehouse I would say 10% of ALL the packages I unloaded from HGV's were Chain Reactions. It was unbelievable!
