Picked up a new 850 last weekend, had been thinking about replacing my 850 T5 and considered later cars (P2 S60 or V70), but kept coming back to the 850, so decided to go for an R - had to be a manual this time as well!

This one came up for reasonable money, had a scuff on NSF wing and ABS fault - other than, it was excellent. Last owner had it for 10 years, full Volvo history, few subtle mods worth having, my favourite colour as well!! Light interior put me off initially, but since owning it I think I much prefer it, especially now it's getting warmer!!

Anyway, apart from the wing (I've got a new one ready to go on once I get chance) the bodywork was very good - funnily enough someone hit me up the arse the day I bought it in London traffic  Luckilly, no harm done, just pushed the bumper in a touch. Only thing was, it was swirly as hell, so I couldn't have that!! Trouble is, working 7 days a week fitting it in was a pain, but I managed it across a few days. Didn't get quite the correction I was hoping for, my cutting pads are past there best now, but it looks pretty good - only downside is bonnet looks like it has been resprayed and is a little matt still, I might try cutting it further, but I may just end up getting the bonnet & bumper re-sprayed as they both have plenty of stonechips.

So here's a vague 50:50 of the roof to show original swirling

and the drivers side finished:

and a quick one to show that nearly all of the swirling is now gone smile :

Was out & about this morning, but managed to pull over and grab a few pics - shame about the noise, either my camera has a bit of a problem with shadow noise, or it was my fault and I underexposed the car too much, causing noise when upping the exposure in LR. Maybe it was just the combination of a shiny dark car, in the midday sun - should have know better!!

So far I'm really happy with it, feels nice & tight, boosts well, brakes feel great - seller even had a hard boot liner & detachable towbar.

Got a couple of bits to freshen up that get missed on the service schedules, then maybe a few extra mods will come along wink

Anyway, enough ramblings!! Love it!

Great cars, so reliable and kind of a 'sleeper' car. Fantastic colour/alloys combo OP.

Either an 850R or a V70R ( not sure what the difference is) passed me today.

Just love the sound of the 5 cylinder engines they have.

Looking at how little they go for these days, I'm tempted.
I paid £200 for my one above...needed 2 hoses and 2 bushes (£51) to get it through the MoT biggrin

850s were the big estates before the V70s, from '92 to '97 where the S70/V70 took over. 850R Autos had a 2.3 I5T, 225/240bhp (w/overboost), manuals produced 250bhp

V70s came in 3 phases, FWD and AWD. Ph1s & 2s came with the 2.3 I5T and 240/250bhp dependent on gearbox, Ph3s are very rare and come with a 265bhp 2.4 I5T with twin tailpipes

Wow another Volvo 850 thread. Stunning car AMH82 you two have made a magnificent job of cleaning that up thumbup

Mine needs paint it's past that stage! I bought it on a whim about a week ago and then shortly after in the quest for spares came across Martins' (Jenx) for the pricely sum of £200. Mine stood me in under a £1k for the years motoring including fully comp insurance, tax and mot. Martins was nearly half of that but he has had to spend a bit on it.

Since then I have learned a lot about these cars, and have just come back from Brighton today meeting another owner and buying some more parts for it. I've experimented with the boost, which is very easy to adjust and mine is now way past R spec in performance. My petrolhead lodger builds racing car chassis and performance exhausts so next in line is a 3" system from the turbo back. As a result of our research it appears that there is a hole in the market in the UK for high performance exhausts at a reasonable price, so we are interested to see if anyone would be interested in a custom made 3" exhaust, either with a racing cat or without. If enough people were interested we could organise a group buy which would get the costs down further. We are also looking at hybrid turbo's as the stock ones run out of steam at around 320hp. The bottom end is reportedly good for around 400hp on stock rods, but a steel bottom end is readily available if you are looking for more. You only need to youtube Volvo and you can see lots of 600hp cars out there.

What these cars present is a lot of bang for buck. They are really over-engineered, solid and a lot of quality for little money. In addition; they are quite brisk as standard, and can take a lot of tuning for not a lot of money. In a time where performance cars are a luxury, this is the last car I would put on my shopping list, but since I have had it, I've not been tempted to use my 928GT because the OVLOV is waaay more fun smile

Must fix the aircon though furiouscool
