Alpine iDA-X311 or X313

Hi all,
I am looking at putting one of these in my Elise. The X313 states made for iPhone and iPod, the X311 states made for iPod. I have a report that the X311 does work with an iPhone but would like some clarification.
Specifically the 3GS but also the iPhone 4.

I have the 313 in my S2k - works perfectly with my iPhone 3gs.

I connect via USB, not the optional Ipod cable. Works a treat.

Sound quality was a massive step up from my original Honda HU.

Yes, everything was in the box.

I misread the instructions at first and thought I could have a USB input using a memory stick and connect the iPhone using the optional cable.

This is not right, though, and the USB cable is the only way to connect the phone.

It displays artist, album and track on a scrolling screen.

I keep all my music on my phone now and have not missed having a CD drive in the car.

Great, i just called a dealer and they said that it does not work, LOL
USB cable into the back on the headunit then plugs into the bottom of the phone with cable provided full access on headunit. Does it charge, think that should be all now

Mine charges but only when it feels like it.

Sometimes it connects and charges fine.

Sometimes it connects and the phone reports that "Charging is not supported with this accessory"

It plays no problems, either way.

This may be down to the (very) cheap long cable I bought from eBay. I wanted to mount the phone on a windscreen sucker thing, but now I just keep it in the cubby next to the handbrake.

The original short iPhone cable that came with the unit wore through and shorted - this was because of the kink that it developed from the position of the phone in the cubbyhole.
