Hey Guys,

Our x5's alloys seem to be losing their lacquer near the center - anyone seen this ? btw car is less than 7 months old - seriously unimpressed about this !

Any thoughts ? will be taking to the local dealers soon to get their view and thought I'd see if others have seen same or had experience on other Beemers of this... also posted this over at xdrivers

Happened on my E46. They tried to blame stonechips at first, then insisted I must have been using acidic cleaning products, then finally crumbled and admitted it was probably their problem and refinished them. Took a hell of a lot of getting it out of them.

Hi,

Common issue with 'lacquered' wheels - as you drive, little stones and debris will fly up and hit the layer of lacquer causing damage. What'll then happen is that water will get in 'under' that chip in the lacquer and it'll start to look milky around the chipped area.

There's really nothing you can do to prevent it, age of the wheels/car isn't the factor here.

In your case, the damage is occuring in the middle of the wheel around the lug nut holes, so it's possibly a 'thinner' than usual layer of lacquer applied during the manufacturing stage, but quite within tolerances. It may well be the small stonechips too, so the BMW dealer will say that, and you'll say it's a manufacturing flaw. As a compromise, seeing as it's only been a few months, they might agree to funding a complete refurbishment ? you can only ask !! and see how it ends up !

Good luck !
Cheers, Dennis!

Thanks for the feedback Dennis, strange that this is the rears only though, i can understand chipping occurring but both fronts are fine, both rears have almost identical pattern of lacquer loss around the center.

The location of the problem doesn't seem to be an area that would suffer stone chipping causing this, hunted around a bit and doesn't seem to be reported in great detail anywhere else. Will have the dealer look at it next week.

Its a fairly standard warranty claim. The wheels should be fit for purpose, shedding laquer like that is not fit for...

Problem is that you can get them refurbed/replaced
and they'll probably start corroding again a year down the line..
