Boxster Battery

I have a regularly used 98 Boxster and the Porsche supplied battery has just failed after just over two years. The AA guy who came to sort us suggested that the cranking level was too low at 340 cca and should be 680cca. Porsche centre says no, but all other replacement suppliers quote 680. Any thoughts?

I'd go with the porsche centre. imo the aa know a little about lots of cars.

I've checked a couple of online battery shops and they're specifying 680ccA and up batteries for the Boxster

To be honest I've met more knowledgeable AA/RAC mechanics than many of the OPC Technicians.....with me having to correct the OPC on technical details on more than one occasion.

Thanks. I thought the one thing the AA/RAC guys might know about was batteries and as you say most non-OPC suppliers state 680a. Porsche OPC are adamant that 340a is right but I guess I can't really damage anything going for a 680a and I can also get a 5 year warranty unlike the mean 2 year Porsche one.
...and I do resent having to buy the acid as a seperate item!!

Overpriced battery going after 2 years is not right. Why on earch do you bother with the Porsche (unless you have some warranty scheme with them) ?

Quite right. I won't be doing that again in a hurry. Just spoke to Porsche Chester to see if they would offer a goodwill gesture against a replacement which they didn't want to know about. Offered to replace it for me for only £273.00. And if I fit it myself - only £153.00 Bargain!!!

I don't know the rating but last time I put a battery in a Boxster I remember it being quite a large lump - almost the size you'd expect for many diesels.

Don't remember anything difficult about fitting so just get one from Eurocarparts, Halfords, local parts centre or similar and fit it yourself

The most common battery used is the 063 which has a rating of 350 amps (en).

Not checked the requirements for the Boxster but I'd certainley not be paying £150+ for one especially as there will be no dicernable difference between a porsche supplied one and a good quality battery from bosch etc.

in fact the bosch will be better, last longer and have a 5 year warranty....
