How are they connected?

Not sure everything is broadcast in 5.1 so make sure what you are watching has an appropriate soundtrack.

Broadcast HD doesn't mean surround sound is included, where'd you get that notion from?
Do you think Masterchef needs 5.1 Dolby? Would Bill Oddy's wildlife watch series be improved if it had 7.1 THX?
Think you need to stop confusing Broadcast with BR movies!

actually I've come back .... I'm not a guru, and aome with what i feel is a bonfide question smile ...... Jools Holland still on pro-logic and this was a prog heavily advertised as hd baed on sound, guess by pervious statements not... all i wanted was a simple yes or no, not a condescending answer (ohh well that's pistonheads, should of gone to to the shop to get a condescending sales assistant instead).... we are not blessed with knowledge in particular fields..... I'll happily tak V8's with you though smile )... but there is no need to answer as if taliking to a complete imbosile, also happy to talk time dealy's on speakers and PA's as i understand them to ...... but what comes through my tv i'm at a loss

The first reply asked "how are they connected"

If you answer (I guess the answer will be hdmi only) you may find you get a response suggesting you connect the digital out from sky to your receiver.

Ok, so what is your HD box and what is your processor?

You may need to tell the HD box to output in a format your processor understands.

Why do you not have the processor connected via hdmi? That's what I do and I have no problems getting the 5.1 on TV shows.

It's a samsung virgin V+ box, and yamaha e800 dsp processor (yep its old and does have hdmi connections), but I can't see why the toslink connection doesn't work...... the Samsung V+ says it puts 5.1 sound out via the optical output, and the E800 accepts 5.1 down toslink (checked by using sony bdp e500, usually connected via coaxial).....

it's hard to check settings unless you a tv prog is in 5.1 ... (how would you know this for def ?)

hmmm..... not totally, can have the above configuration and get 5.1, but can't use tv volume (for quiet listening) with out changing back.
