10-15 years ago I was doing 1-2 a month all year round, and preferred the wet, snowy, icy days better as it levelled the playing field between me and the Caterwesticals.

Must have done 50 or so in the first 3 years, but other things became the priority and I dropped to less than 6 a year, with a couple of 'Ring trips thrown in.

There are people who started the same time as me, attended most of the same events, but have carried on with them at the same pace.

It's the maintenance/consumables that killed me, as I didn't want to take a stripped out track car everywhere and did most events in my daily drivers which were a Corrado VR6 and then an E34 M5. The M5 ate a set of pads every 3 events, did 6-8mpg, and could eat a set of tyres in one event, so it was costing about £1000 a day.

The events got more expensive, fuel got more expensive, my free time became less (which meant I had to go on the more expensive weekend dates), and in the end I decided I couldn't support that many events.

If I'd had a Caterham from day 1, then I'd probably still have some cash, but I have nowhere to keep more than 1 car, so my track car has to be my daily driver - which also means that I'm always driving a fast daily driver.
