So I've now done 41 miles and the alternator has died.
Having seen this posted a number of times before it would seem that a change of make would be the way forward.
Anyone found something different (Available in the UK) that fits?

Thanks
Steve

Steve, I had terrible alternator woes, namely because I had to mount the alternator on top of the engine as the dry-sump pump was where the alternator used to be, but also because the one which was fitted was unable to supply enough current with the air-con and my new bigger fuel pumps flat out. The volt guage was sitting at 10v - not good.

After a lot of trial and error and swearing and faffing about, I ended up using one off of a Toyota Supra Turbo (mark1). This is a Bosch item, and the first one dodn't work becasue I hadn't linked the 'excitor' wire to the plus ve connection (a simple loop is needed, thats all).

Unfortunately I ended up buying a brand new one from a motor factors before I realised my initial error. This new alternator is rated at 90 amps, so the air con doesn't struggle. Also, as previously mentioned by others on here, you will have to modify the auxillery loom as it handles too much current as is, and the ignition switch can become red hot as the excessive current caused by the air-con passes through it.

This alternator was not cheap, coming to me at £140 trade, but I am more than confident of its ability and am well happy with my choice.

My car is at the factory at the moment and I am expecting it back in about a week. I could have a look for you and take some model numbers if you are interested.

This alternator is also half the size of the stock item, and this was also a major factor contributing to using it.

As if this wasn't enough bad luck in one day, we managed to short out a wire on the alternator somehow and blow the MSD ignition unit - so it was three hundred quid later and another week before the car was up and running again

Re- your trailering observation and joe public; Clive and I had a very similar incident when the fan belt and alternator went and left me on the hard shoulder. The AA managed to get me to a motorway service station, and Clive turned up with his GTR to help. We had one GTR on a trailer and one sitting next door - you had to see it ! There was loads of people, all asking the usual questions

They found it most amusing that Clive's GTR was the backup vehicle. Thankfully, so did I

Regarding the wiring...

There have been a number of posts regarding the loom and mods people have done. I don't want to discuss right or wrong or debate anything.

Would like a list of recommendations for increased size, purpose etc. This is the time to do it. DOn't want to realize after the fact.
