I have at simple question...Would I be completely insane to buy an 03 with 100k on it but full history for 12k?

I have read so much about the reliability of this vintage merc but every time I hear one go by at full chat I need that V8 noise in my life!

I figure that at 100k all of the bad stuff may already have gone wrong? See how I am trying to convice myself...I'm doomed I tell you.

Thanks, Bruce

I agree, the 55K sounds amazing from outside - but I wonder how audible it is inside the double glazed cabin. I've just bought a 2004 CL500 and can barely hear the v8 at all, even with my foot to the floor.

Re reliability, I think the big things to look out for are the ABC suspension and rust. (If it has full main dealer sh, the rust won't be an issue as it should be covered by the 30yr bodywork guarantee).

I'm really enjoying my CL500. Coming from a 2007 Boxster S, it feels massively refined and comfortable. And it's undeniably a lot of car for the money. But don't be mistaken into thinking it's a sports car - it's much more GT cruising that B-road thrills.

Would you be mad buying one? Not at all. But have it checked out properly. You can always sell it a few months down the line ... although clearly a 7-8yr old CL55k with over 100k miles on the clock will almost certainly take a while to shift.

Awesome car, best advice would be to make sure you have a few thou just incase any problems do occur because maintenance of these cars is not cheap, however if you have the car checked over and you are a bit lucky then these costs maybe minimal

Love my cl55 amg komp but they can have their share of issues - corrosion, active body control issues, supercharger cooling pump failure, big tyres which it will eat if your right foot is made of lead. That said If you get a good one it'll knock your socks off. Rapid doesn't even come close. Refined isn't a good enough description for the ride. They are understated, but I'm saying this coming from an SL65AMG and an SL55AMG before that. The CL55AMG doesn't draw the same attention as the SL does but I prefer it that way.

Having owned an E55 AMG (supercharged) I can offer some of my personal comments and advice:

I had no end of issues with my '03 car, thank god I had a warranty. I dread to think what it would have cost me if I hadn't - and an E55 is a far cheaper car to fix, with far less to go wrong than a CL.

I would suggest that if you have a few grand to put away for the inevitable problems, just save a little longer and buy one with less mileage and in better condition. Oh, and maybe newer - 2003 was supposed to be a very bad year for build quality.

This is a car that cost what, maybe 100-110k brand new?

Would I buy a far more reliable 911 turbo with 100k on the clock? No way!

I think you are either really stupid, or have balls the size of footballs to be considering it! smile

Also, the E55 was very muted in sound - are you comparing it to maybe having heard SL55's? The CL will not sound anywhere near as loud as the SL.

Cheap 55 AMG's have bankrupt people in the past, beware!

Hahaha. Thanks for this I decided that even thought the car looked immaculate the seller wanted too much money. I have now done the sensible thing (not) of making an offer on a W210 E55 AMG! Its very cheap and yes I know about the rust so I will fix that. Will post if I get it on wednesday.

Lol good choice in my opinion.

If you really want that 55k engine and noise, why not buy a nice W211 E55 AMG, and get the rear silencers removed?

You'd probably be able to do that, insure it and put a warranty on it for the price you would have paid for the CL.

I don't know why but however I looked at it I felt that the W211 just looked a tad over priced.

If the car I am looking at is half as good as it seems then a 3 ish k E55 seems bonkers in value terms. Even if I have to throw 1500 quid at it.

All the best and thanks for the comments.
