Tiling above worktop

It's certainly normal to do it that way, but it isn't best practice.
The correct way to do it is to fix a batten above the worktop at one tile height plus double whatever your tile spacing is going to be, then tile from that. Then add in the bottom row which will then leave enough space to grout properly with silicone. It's a much better looking job that way, though I daresay most people won't notice it.

This is how I've always done it. just use a spacer or a matchstick to lift the bottom row of tiles above the worktop and remove the spacers before grouting and sealing. I don't suppose it really matters but I've always been happier knowing that it's possible for the worktop and tiles to move slightly relative to each other without risk of the tiles cracking off the wall.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
