Insurance held or advice

Hi guys first time poster reaching out for some honest advice.
So lets startthis off im a 28 year old married male with a 10 year old son living in nw5 wich is classed as Kentish town or hampstead. So afer about 10 years of waiting to get a car and start with modding mainly engine based ive managed to convince the wife to let me do it. All was well, ie looking around ive found a few decent cars id like to try. So i went on some of these compare sites and had a look at insurance for me and wow i was surprised at how much they want.
Ive been driving for 6 years and have a clean liscence with no convictions. The thing is i share a car with my wife and mother in law and shes been down as the main driver for all these years and well shes got all the no claims were as i have none. I also work as a parcelforce driver and therefore drive a van all day and am classed as a professional driver. Now i walk to work as its only 2 mins away and i have no intention on driving the short distance so the insurance is down as social only.
Ok so the car i got a test qoute on was a 2002 honda civic sport insurance group 6 with a factory fitted alarm and immoboliser.
The qoute i got back were silly i mean most were down as 1.9k through to 2.8 - 5k i mean im not a young driver and ive never had a crash not at work nor in the daily driver so why so high. Yes we may be in a dodgy area but on our fiesta wich is a 1.6 2009 titanium the qoutes are only 400 quid. Oh and the car will be garaged most of the time and thats in a secure area next to my house wich is covered with cctv from the local police what more do they want lol... Please any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated

Postcode and the lack of NCB will have a lot to do with it I expect.
http://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-rat... - your postcode says "Refer" here which I assume means it's very high risk
Try specialist insurers like Adrian Flux, Sky Insurance, etc - especially since you said you're after performance modding.

Flux should give you a decent quote if your looking to mod the car.
Ok sounds like a plan, Whilst here im planning on getting a car that responds well to engine tuning mods chips remaps etc maybe turbo or scharging as all im after is alot of speed but it has to be obtainable through doing it myself as this is just something i really am looking at doing to do as a hobby more then anything before i eventually move on to a more top spec jap car ala rx7 that i can do a full blowm job on with the knowledge im hoping to gain from this.
So with all that in mind any recomendations regarding a base car, not got a huge ammount to blow on the car itself maybe up to about 2 grand to start with so yeah if you guys have any cars in mind that respond well to tuning id be a happy chappy.
