Having come to the conclusion that the current barge has to go, and that I don't like any of the hatchback options out there I am looking at a regular saloon. Prob 3 series or c class.
Thing is all the friends I have with kids are screaming at me to get a 4x4 or estate as we are planning kids as well. Mrs t wants a saloon too but is getting concerned given the fervor of her friends who advocate buying a Toyota landcruiser at the first sign of pregnancy...
So help me out. Tell me that you run a normal sized car and have a family, and that I don't need to buy a citroen Picasso or a range rover sport to cope with a baby.

I am quite happy. Some references from other normal petrolhead parents would help me balance out the non petrolhead herd mentality of mrs ts friends.
And yes, I am sure like half of the people here I was brought up in a ford escort (we couldn't afford a house) but as we all know nothing is the same die as when we were young. Sweets are now smaller, cars are bigger but have less room inside, and standard baby items are approximately 3x bigger than in the 70s.

I have 2 kids and did not want a mpv. Ended up with a v50 which I think looks pretty good. I also prefer the 3 series in estate guise over the saloon. Hope I am not too odd for that, they just seem more handsome and less rep mobile?
Very happy with my v50. Focus size but with practical boot to swallow kid stuff, very comfy, handles ok, great stereo. Way better than a mpv

I prefer estates to saloons anyway.... That said it depends on how much you plan to go away with it in the first six months as they do require a lot of s
t initially. Particularly if you're visiting people who don't have a spare travel cots and you go for a "travel system" type pram. Once they're past 9 months to a year and are eating what you do and in a forward facing seat you're absolutely laughing.
Re MPVs and faux 4x4s, the raised seating does make loading them easier - a mate of mine said he never understood sprog mobiles until he saw me launching miniBill into the back of the ZTT.
It's a question of compromises, as ever, and depends whether you can cope with packing light and awkward lifting or whether you want to join the other sheep...

That's your wife talking for you again. Listen: you're the car nut, main bread winner (probably) and the man of the house. If you can afford a C63 estate go and put a deposit on one today. Don't even consult the wife.I dread to think what else she tells you to do. I have a wonderful relationship with my partner but in no way would she dream of influencing my car choice within reason.
