E90 Professional multimedia/USB music problem

My October 2010 E90 has the professional multimedia unit.
I spec'd the USB music option too.
Occasionally, I get 'artifacts' creeping into the music.
Little 'chirps' and other noises that spoil the track.
They're not evident when you take the USB out and play the tracks back on a PC.
They're not evident right now when I play the track back in the (stopped) car.
So 'something' is giving occasional interference on USB playback.
Question is...what could it be???
