AJP 4.7 Info Required
Discussion
Can anyone shed any lights on how the 4.7 conversions are faring in terms of bhp on road cars? I get the impression there are a few out there now, but very little info seems to make it on here. Just curious as to where we stand with AJP tuning options................
Also, whatever happened to the AJP8 turbo project????

As far as I know the 4.7 can be tuned to 500 bhp!
The options for AJP tuning include:-
4.7 (APM and Power I think)
4.5 with red rose spec etc plus 4.2 inlets (Austec & probably other TVR specialists)
4.8 (Raceproved)
5.0 (not sure who has done this)
4.2 - inlet etc mods to get nearly 400bhp (Raceproved and others I guess)
4.5 - various head, breathing, ecu etc options via lots of garages

The turbo one was last talked about in an Omega(?) - the name escapes me, but I think it was Jon, would love to know more.
Two supercharged Belgium 4.2's - not heard anything since they surfaced 5 years ago and disappeared again.
One supercharged development - PH'er - his name is Campbell, fantastic car that I would again love to know more about??
4.7's have been in Mike and Jon's racers - and have appeared to be very very powerful/ reliable? Not heard of them used on road, but again - hugely interested. BIG power, 480bhp in Mikes IIRC, which must be mental!
I do love a good AJP!!

There's a supercharged 4.2 over here that's converted by Moritz Racing, the Dutch Vortech distributors who also race a few Marcoses in various series. Must say the conversion looks the business.
As an aside they will do custom Vortech installations on just about anything and I'll be looking to work with them on pre-serp RV8 conversions (which SC Power is not planning to do - fair enough given the cost of developing a bolt-on kit to be installed by anyone who can hold a spanner; thing is the three or four people who enquired about the SC kits with me all run pre-serp engines...) depending on interest...

Apologies for "Off-topic" and using your aside. I'm a pre-serp 400 Chim. I had always dismissed blowers as there was insufficent "nose/keyway" on the crank to power a blower. The alternative was beyond a simple bolt-on, but to modify/replace the crank. So if you had to dismatle the bottom end, what was the point in remaining a 4 ltr and using a blower when you could go 5 ltr blower for similar work/cost??Also, curious how you plan to do this with a spanner??
Finally, if I had a blower on my 4 Ltr, would the LT 77 "really" stand the torque ?? Another theme of "never-ending-costs"..............

Tks.

Well indeed, how they are going to do without dismantling the bottom end it remains the question - but they do have a proven track record on 'difficult' installs - and it will always be a 'custom' installation by them rather than something engineered for DIY install, the engineering cost of which would be prohibitive. But it'd sure be an interesting route to explore...Also, curious how you plan to do this with a spanner??

As for the 'box I don't believe there is that much in it between the LT77 and T5 (which is only rated to 300 lbs/ft IIRC?). There's always the option of using a strengthened output bearing assembly on the Rover box which I think would be the main Achilles' Heel on a road driven car.
For racing/heavy duty track work, however, all bets are off either way...

Many thanks. As I thought, but it's always good to make sure no "new techiques" surface. 4.8 ?
5.0, factory conversion bit fragile from what i know and no real big power gains from 4.7?
biggest gain from a 4.7 conversion is the increased torque, on average with varying setups about 60ftlbs, it works with 4.2 inlets(ported),4.5 inlets, stock exhaust manifolds or custom ones,cat's/no cats jonnyw's is effectivley a road engine running cat's and ported 4.2 inlets, mikes is a bit more but running on a safe map due to reg's, after a few niggle's that have been sorted they are reliable strong ajp's and power for pound probably the best option out there(sorry if that sounds a bit carlsberg)

Hi Andy
We going to see you (and a 4.7) at chatsworth?
Plenty of spare room at mine, even have a couple of old stone pig sheds ;-)

hi gary hope your well, doubt it tbo if i had time def but just too busy atm how about oulton park on the 14th may 4.7 ajp and 4.5 speed six mixing it in the gt cupWe going to see you (and a 4.7) at chatsworth?

Andy/APM, Are there any of these fantastic 4.7's out on the roads? I am surprised more people haven't gone down this route as I have heard the price of such work is actually very reasonable, especially for the power/torque gains!
Gazzab - Do you know if Joolz has had a hand in the 4.8 development work?/ do you know of any cars that have had this fitted??
Everyone else - why are people not going for more mental AJP's? Is it just a case of 'if it aint broke' or are people just seeing (perhaps wrongly) the LS as a more reliable option instead*?

- IME the AJP is pretty bulletproof, pretty much 95k and counting, so I don't think there is much to be gained on that front with an LS personally...

I think the 4.7 makes more sense for 4.2 owners wanting to upgrade, as going from 360 to 460 bhp is quite a significant hike as oppose to say from 420 to 460. 4.5 owners have far more options generally speaking. I have been tempted by the LS conversion for a long time now, but I'm not sure that throwing £15k+ makes econmic sense with Cerb values down to around £12k now on average. I do like the delivery and manners of the AJP, so a 4.7 upgrade would be very desirable. The turbo conversion sounded very promising but seems to have died a death somewhere along the line, same with the supercharger projects.
Andy, if you have time please could you email me a price for the conversion. My 4.2 engine already has the larger 4.5 crank fitted from its first rebuild and I'd be looking to retain the 4.2 induction. The engine is in otherwise fine condition with no know faults.

The LS engine and the AJP have very different characteristics. I have both so should know. The AJP loves revs but to get the most out if it you need to stir the gearbox.
While you are changing gear the LS has used it's cubes to just grunt it's way to the horizon. If you can get an AJP to do the same and still rev you will have something special.
I will have a decision to make next year as I will have an LS2 sitting there doing nothing when I refurb my Cerbera. The Ultima is in the process of getting a new lightly massaged LS7.
My spare time is rather full at the moment!!!!

From what I have been told during discussions about having mine enlarged to 4.7 it was about £7K including a new steel crank plus other bits and quite a bit of head work, this was using the same kit as TVR Power and APM use, this was from Jason at STR8SIX, he has done quite a few already, most are for road use as I understand.
I very nearly had it done over the winter but decided to get every thing else on the car sorted this winter and next year it will get the 4.7 which will run a safe map for the first few thousand miles and then get mapped for max power/drivability.
