SL55 AMG

Has anyone experienced issues re high usage of oil on their SL55 AMG?
I've just bought a 2004 with low mileage and only done just over 3,000 miles since owning it. But in within that mileage the computer has informed me to 'top up 1 litre oil on next refuel' - this has happened three times, ie. about every 1,000 miles. The car has been correctly serviced by Mercedes and has no oil leaks.

Does anybody have similar experiences or can they throw any light as to whether this is an engine fault?

not much help, but i've had 2 SL's and neither has needed topping up outside the service schedule....

Again not much help. My SL55 has never needed any oil outside the servicing schedule.

What oil do you guys use? I've been topping up with Mobil 1 fully synthetic but today a Merc agent stated they use Shell Helix semi synthetic 5w 30.

Don't worry. Mine did exactly the same thing and it turned out the oil pressure switch was faulty.

MB changed it under warranty.

Only use Mobil 1 oil.

You need a w40 oil in that engine as its the same as my slk sans supercharger 5w30 is not specced for it or at least it isnt on my car. I would go with 0w40 mobil 1 my engine uses about 1ltr every 8k miles. Also its not the oil pressure switch but the level sender that goes defunct. Merc dealers have a dipstick (ok several) i would get your level confirmed as overfilling can destroy these engines.

Thanks to the guys for the last two responses. Update - Car is with Mercedes and the oil has been drained and its showing that the oil sensor appears to be correct with its reading. And there are no visible signs of any oil leaks, so it remains a mystery. Further road testing is planned for tomorrow. One comment made to me is that if the engine still burns oil then the oil rings might be the cause and the engine should be inspected and if the cylinders are ok then the rings can be changed.

My E55 AMG did the same thing, and it was a sensor fault.

Do you ever have oil pressure warnings after topping up?

My level sensor was fked, so when I filled up the requested amount, it resulted in too high an oil pressure at high revs which then caused another warning.

I know you say they have checked the sensors, but after having dealt with some rather thick MB technicians (one asked me to link him to the internet article I had found suggesting what the fault was as he was baffled) I would get a 2nd opinion!
