Velux blinds - are motorised ones worth the £££££

Just had a extension done and the new bedroom has a velux in the pitched roof. Given that and the other conventional window it's a case of as soon as the sun comes up, you're not having a lie in.

So we need a blackout blind for it and have seen that you can get a solar powered, remote control blind from Velux. Sounds ace, retro fit, no wiring, no batteries and it's just a case of get into bed, look at the stars for a few minutes, roll over press a button and off to sleep.

The alternative is a manual blind that will mean getting into bed, gaze at the stars for a few minutes, get out of bed, reach up approx 3m with a pole to pull the blind, get back into bed, off to sleep then repeat in the morning to raise it back up. I can just see the manual blind being left closed all the time which makes having the Velux put in a monumental waste of cash!!

The problem is the cost of the fancy one is just over £100 more than the boggo version.

The Mrs is complaining a lot re the price; "I'll just put it up and down every day...." will you fvvkers like dear, you're 5"2'. It'll end up being my fekin job

We have them on two windows and they are great. They simply work. No faffing with poles, trying to slide the blind. Just a button push.

Assuming 30 seconds per day extra irritation and getting in and out of bed, over 5 years you will spend over 15 hours opening and closing blinds, equivalent to £6.57 per hour. Ours have lasted almost 20 years.

We have one in a bedroom up high in the pitched roof - absolutely brilliant, wake up in pitch black, open the blind from bed just a fraction to start lighting up the room...then once I'm ready to get up just press the button and open it fully!

I have two in the my home cinema linked to the room controls. They are a god send. I also have two very big ones in the kitchen that also have rain sensors, worth every penny
