URGENT HELP NEEDED!!

I am really hoping that someone in the know can offer some help/advice.
6 months ago I purchased my mum and dad a 2002 Mercedes A140 Classic Auto. Unfortunately they have had no end of problems.
They had it serviced and MOT'd last week with no problems. 100 miles later they start the car and the dash lights up with all sorts of warning lamps and the car would only drive in what sounds like limp mode.
My mum dropped it of at her local garage in Fulham this morn for them to investigate.
They called an hour later to say they have dropped the car to a local Merc specialist they use in Fulham where they will run a diagnostics check.
They called my Mum an hour or so later with bad news. They said a 'module' 'inside' the gearbox has failed and the part alone is just over £1000!! The final bill would be £1600!!
My Mum phoned me and naturally was very upset as this is a huge amount of money to them. I said I would call in the garage on my way home to have a chat plus I wanted to have a look at some receipts in the glovebox. This is because when I purchased the car I remember the owner at the time mentioning that a gearbox module had been replaced in the last year or so.
I found the invoice from Mercedes in 2009 for:
Electronic selector module and a floor shift mec: £550.
I then spoke with the Mercedes specialist and they said that it is not 'this' module that has failed but one 'inside' the gearbox. Also I could not source a module myself as the part has to be 'coded' to the chassis number?? Does this ring true, is there many modules 'inside' the box?
Does this sound correct? Would a replacement box not be better? I had a quick look on e-bay and a gearbox specialist in London are advertsing a refurbished box fully installed for £995.
Any help is massively appreciated. I have told my Mum to collect the car tomorrow and make sure she gets the diagnostic print out. I would then investigate what to do over the few days.

Look on Autotrader, lots of auto A class' with knackered fully auto boxes. www.honestjohn.co.uk has a load of stuff about the A class too, almost all of it isn't good (sadly)
