Mom wants a new car

Hey PH, Long story short, my moms been mooching on auto trader and the likes for a while now (Ive shown her PH too, dont worry) and shes after a new car. Basically budget is anything upto about £7k tops. She really likes the latest Ford Fiesta but it seems a little out of budget. So the short list is;
Renault clio
Mazda 2
Ford Fiesta (if possible)

Does anybody have any recommendations or things to look out for with any of these cars. She particularly wants a low milage example however she is yet undecided between diesel and petrol.
Any info or tips would be great.

Nah, just always seemed to call her mom.
I keep advising petrol however insurance is a bit of an issue due to living in an area of the midlands that has its own asbo and i intend to be insured on it. So whatevers cheapest to insure gets my vote.

The Honda Jazz is actually a nice car if not necessarily the coolest thing on the road. Get a pink one I've found that insurance is far less on a VW Polo than a lot of it's rivals and I live in a dodgy area too.

Don't let her buy a Clio. Could the Grande Punto be a potential candidate?

She refuses to drive a jazz, i suppose the image has kind of took that one out of her market. But the Punto could be a good idea.

SEAT Ibizas represent good value in this sector, come with some good engines, have plenty of kit, and look quite stylish relatively speaking.

I know someone who got a dark reddish orange one with a black stripe over it. She loves the keyless entry and start.

Good call on the Swift and the Ibiza, I am just having a quick trawl in the classifieds to see whats out there.
Unfortunately the Fiesta offered is just out of budget, the top end is really the £7k.
The swift has gone in quite high up the list now.

I've been very happy with my Ibiza, so I'd also recommend them. You'd get a new shape one for £7k, 1.4 SE/ Sport is the pick of the range. The 1.2 is a bit underpowered/ basic and the 1.6 is unpopular and a bit costly to run for what it is. They came out about the same time as the new Fiesta, but are much less common and far better equipped. Uses the same chassis as the latest VW Polo and Audi A1, drives/ handles well, not quite up to Fiesta standards but still good.

For that money you won't get better IMO (not that I'm bias or anything )

Have to admit we drove a 1.4 Sport Ibiza when test driving for the missus and eliminated it on the basis of the wheezy engine. Did the do them in different power outputs?

No the standard 1.4 16v comes in 85PS only, there are a couple of versions (EU4/ EU5) but the power output is the same. I find it OK, much nicer than the new 1.2 Corsa I had the misfortune of driving the other day which was supposed to have the same power output.
