After an engine upgrade over the winter I am now in need of installing some rim screws to my 32x14.5x15 Toyo slicks. Can anyone offer any advice on the correct way of doing this?
Thanks

I'm probably biased, but for me the correct answer is "fit beadlocks, not rim screws". Yes, they're yet more expense. But they're still the right answer :-)

Beadlocks are really not needed unless turning 2000bhp+ IMO, even a considerable amount of TAD and TAFC racers in the states still run liners and tubes, thats down into the 5.3s over 260mph. They add more rotational weight and tend to un settle a lot of cars.

For what you're doing I'd saw rim screws would be a good way to go, it's not a bodge or dangerous, pro stocks ran them succesfully for years and they come well recommended.

we put liner wheels on the car for the first time this weekend
as this year we are allowed to do it
7 hits no shake 0.98/0.99 @60 all weekend exept a stray 1.00
no good tad/tafc in europe or the us use Beadlocks and very few pro mods in the US since the rule change allowing liners
and the tire diddnt move at all
not many use beadlocks unless they are mandatory... A fuel and TF /TFFC

do you realize the cost of a pair of beadlocks??? the guy has had an engine upgrade and is considering rim screws, does that sound like a car that needs beadlocks to do it right when 2700 lb pro mod cars dont...

Don't need beadlocks mate, my Bantam has rim screws and has run a 6.8 so sure you will be fine.

We have run both liners and beadlocks and while we had no issues at all with liners (though we ran a 36" tyre) we have now switched to 34.5" so should be interesting change, we had best of 0.96 with the 36" so hopefully should get the old girl to the 60' and 330' quicker too.

Thanks for the replys.

I think you guys are far quicker than I will ever be. My 69 Camaro broke into the 9s for the first time last weekend with a 9.7 and I hope to get down to a 9.5 after a bit of fine tuning. After I get a good baseline I am aiming for high 8s with the gas.

So I think rims screws are my best option as my wheel had moved about 1/4 of a turn in the tyre.

So whats the best way to install them, people at the track were telling me I dont need to remove the tyre just to drill a pilot hole and screw a 8mm bolt through the rim and into the bead. Is this correct ?

Nice one on PB's mate

Up to you mate but there your wheels and tyres, if it was me I'd remove the tyres. Just make sure you deburr inside after drilling wheel and make sure you re balance them

i think the best way would be to tap a thread in the wheel and a pilot hole in the bead area of the tire then screw you rim screw in by hand . the tire would need to be removed first to tap the rim of course.

As Graham said, last time we used rim screws they were self tapping as well. Read the guides on the Weld and Mickey Thompson websites I posted so you can't go wrong

Make a template out of Hardboard or 6mm mdf. Mark it out as decribed elsewere and tansfer to the wheel when happy with the spacing. Lot cheaper than f/up a rim.
