It turns out that the local council is starting to put parking charges on blue badge spaces. Ironically, this starts on royal wedding day.

The NHS has spent many £s on me, for which I'm grateful. However, I remain a failed back surgery syndrome case. Walking (for one thing) bloody hurts.

I'd be more than happy, though, to smash the gits who came up with the charging idea in the spine with a baseball bat. I wouldn't insist on the seven years' pain, the four major surgeries, the nerve block injections or the countless painkillers. No, I'd just say, 'There you are, see how you go on now...and enjoy the speed bumps.'

Rant over.

Why shouldn't you pay like the rest of the population?

How's that ironic?

Well, they get a space where they want it, that is the issue, surely, not having it free. Why should it be free?

Perhaps you could explain yourself.

The other side of the argument, I suppose, is what if they are completely incapable of using public transport?

Simple really. Why should a blue badge holder get their space for free, when others have to pay?

I was about to mention that. Always depends on the person.

Regrettably I think disabled bays are great but widely abused in terms of remaining parked there while the drivers go off somewhere or by people using other people's disabled badges. I can see the sense in trying to control duration but perhaps they should make the first hour free as a nice compromise.

In many ways, I have to agree with why shouldn't you pay because many unemployed on benefits still have to pay for their parking so it can't ne entirely a cost issue though I understand that those who rely entirely on their car for transport need the spaces more.

There again, those spaces outside B&Q and supermarkets - they always manage to lift their shopping but that comes down to degree of disability I suppose.

I could see the argument that blue badge holders shouldn't have to walk to a machine to get the ticket, but I can't see any justification beyond that for the parking actually being free. It seems an odd distinction to make, you may as well make parking free for purple cars...

Sorry? You think that because someone has a disability, they shouldn't pay for parking?

It depends on how severe the disability is.
Maybe they should be put into groups similar to insurance.

I use a blue badge myself and I think that in town the free parking is brillaint as at the moment it takes me about 15min from entering the carpark to leaving the carpark in my wheelchair, Then when I come back another 15min to get my chair back in and seated ready to set off driving again.

Then while out shopping it does take me alot more time to do than anyone else as I'm constantly having to ask for someone to pass me things from high shelves, getting round in a wheelchair is a nightmare as people just stop infront of you or end up making you dtour round them only to find a wall.

I wouldn't mind if they charged a flat rate but near me its something like £4 for the first hour then another £3 for ever hour after which is stupid.

Another thing I hate is people who use a blue badge but clearly don't need one or are using someone elses. Last night I went to my local co-op and someone had parked right cross 2 bays, one of which was a disabled bay. So I parked right behind him and blocked him in and made him wait till I'd finished.

So back to topic, if they do decide to charge then fine but please let it be a flat rate, not on timing, or even extend the times a couple of hours

Hope that all makes sense

What about a compromise?

If you are working, pay.

If you can't work and are on DLA, you don't pay or it's subsidised.

They have a space allocated, so it is 20 meters closer to the place where they may need to be. Again, why should this be free, whilst other people have to pay? Surely all you need is the allocated space. Why does it have to be free as well? If you can afford to go shopping, or have a car in the first place, you can afford the parking fee?

I agree blue badge holders should have priority parking spaces, and there should be less speed bumps however I also don't see the reason this parking is/was free? I think we should all pay the same.

I do indeed, and so, it would appear, do most of the UK's County Councils.

OP, as your blue badge is now an EU-enshrined jobbie, is the Council legally entitled to charge you to park?
