My backbox has fallen apart...

Well after 15 years and 60,000 miles the original back box on my 4.2 has disintegrated. The internal baffling has separated and it now sounds very very rattly.

Now I already have decat pipes and I'd be happy to stick another standard box back on it. Anyone got one spare? I've checked the pistonhead ads and eBay, no joy. Although the custom 4.2 pipes in the Pistonheads ad is tempting - Yorkshire is too far from me as I'm London and Suffolk based.

Alternatively, what's the current popular (and cheap) option for a backbox to go with my decat pipes?

I guess I could always get the angle grinder to my current box, take out the innards and weld it back up

Mine has sounded like that for the last 6 months or so.

You'll be happy to know it doesn't get even rattlier as time goes on, it just stays like that.



Also I'll be keen to find out how you get on with a replacement as I'll have to do it at some stage.

At one stage there was a source for a replacemet in the equivalent parts thread.

the standard Exhaust is/was made by Magnex. Have you tried Bell Hill or Douglas valley for a used one?

Are the 4.2 and S6 boxes the same?
Afaik a 4.2 box on a 4.5 might prove restrictive whereas a 4.5 on a 4.2 is fine? Could be hog wash though.

Personally I'd bite the bullet and get some ACT ones, something like these:

You get much more road clearance and less weight. It's surprising how heavy the standard box is.

A long time ago my local TVR place offered a service to cut open a standard backbox, remove all the baffles and then weld it back together again.

According to them at the time, it was still MOT legal, gave the car a much throatier sound without the harsh rasp of the straight through pipes.

He took me to a Cerb they had in for service that they had done this to and sure enough it was the best sounding Cerb I have ever heard.
