I've currently got 3 PCs in the house and want to connect them so we can move files around easily - how do I do that? One (laptop) is using Windows 2000, the others XP and Win98.

Also, I have broadband currently into the laptop and the other two are connected to BT/Yahoo Anytime. Is there a way to split the broadband line to hook up all to this so that I can save myself £15.99 a month?

Thanks in advance for any help/guidance!

An ADSL Router will do the job you need. I have a wireless 3Com DSL Router and used to have a wired Belkin DSL router.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't know which model is best though!

I'm now the proud owner of this

www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=59013

plus got a USB adaptor for desktop. Works well ! Havent put the card in missus' lappy yet but as I understand we simply share the connection.

Once you have set up the hardware for the network, you should use the networking wizard on the XP system to configure the software part of the set up.

After setting up on the XP system, it will ask if you want to make a config Floppy Disk, say yes and use it in the other systems - especially the WIN98 system.

Currently, I have XP, Linux and Solaris running on my home network - I think I need to buy myself a Mac.....

If you're looking for a wired one then this come highly recommended:

www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000E0YHF/ref=br_ce_ts_3//026-4942333-2107639

I've got it and was very easy to setup with all my computers seeing it just fine

There is a wireless version for a little bit more cash.

Thanks for the great advice guys - I hadn't thought about the wireless option and it would be great to get rid of so many damn cables all over the house. I'm a bit apprehensive about getting everything working out of the box but I'm going for it.

Working my way towards the wireless route. Just upgraded the Win98 to XP. And also upgrading my BT Business Broadband 500 to 1000 to improve download speeds. But herein lies a question - the Business Broadband 500 provides a static IP and BT supplied an Alcatel USB Modem - so will this USB modem simply plug into the DSL router? Any thing about the static IP addressthat could cause problems in linking the other PCs to this router via wireless cards?

Nope - easy to do - just put the static IP on your router ...but you dont need the USB modem...just get an all in one device like this here

The DSL router would have a DSL modem built in so the existing modem would be redundant. My (Metronet) setup was installed using a router from day 1 but I had the option of using a DSL modem like you instead. Based on this I think you should be able to convert from the modem setup to a router setup.

Niggling problem that one of you might be able to resolve!

I now have a Netgear 801.11g adsl router and connection is fine, but there's a 10-15 second delay between opening internet explorer and it finding the home web site (doesn't matter what website I define as home). Once the browser window is open then moving from page to page is instant. If opening successive browser windows then each one comes with the long delay.

A couple of other pieces of info to help. (1) I'm running SecureRemote VPN to enable authentication with a remote server. (2) I had to change the router IP address since the numbering system used was the same as the remote server. (3) I also get the same delay when using the "save as" drop down menus in MS packages eg Word.

It seems to be trying to map a drive.

I spoke to the Netgear tekkies but they said there's no software in the router that could be causing this and although the router seems to be working fine they offered to swap it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Do you have 'universal plug and play' enabled in the router?

Yes, advertisement period 30 minutes / advertisement time to live 4 hops. Does this sound about right?
The UPnP PortMap Table is empty.
