my 4 year old Seiko arctura kinetic (£250 when new) has stopped working, went back to shop and ask if they would take a look, and was told it would cost min of £110 just for a look and a clean

I'd put money on it being the capacitor rechargeable battery. About £30 for a replacement on ebay IIRC.

kinetic's are self winding, i didnt think they had batteries

Kinetics are "automatic quartz" watches. They use a battery to store the charged energy as opposed to the spring used by a purely mechanical watch.
