Hi all,

I have searched, and have also googled, and couldn't find anything that really gives me a definitive answer. I apologise in advancing for asking an insurance question, but would really appreciate the help!

I'm 24, and currently have 4 years NCB, with my current policy up for renewal late August. The policy covers a 3 year old 1.2 Clio, and was only £350 ish. I will shortly be buying a DC5, within a month or so most likely. I've obtained a very competitive quote from Bell, and my current insurer (Direct Line) doesn't cover DC5's, necessitating that I switch.

How best do I do this? I presumed that if I switched Bell would acknowledge 5 years accident free driving at the same point my current insurer would have, had I stayed with them. My brother thinks this is unlikely. Given my current policy is so cheap, and my current car is being sold to a family member living in the same house hold, I don't have a problem 'letting the insurance run' if this is possible, and don't require a refund of what's left of my policy (if that's even an option).

I do realise that my quote from Bell will be based on 4 years, not 5 years, but given I'm only 3 months of obtaining 5 years NCB, I'd hate to reinsure and, effectively, be set 9 months back from achieving 5 years NCB. Part of me thinks this may be somewhat a moot point, given that after one year of insuring the DC5, I'd be at 5 years anyway come renewal time, but it bothers me somewhat that they could lop 9 months of accident free driving off your NCB, effectively.

I do hope this makes sense, and would be very grateful for any help received.

Thanks.

On most 'normal' (i.e. not classic etc,) your NCB will move with you to your new insurer, you will probably be asked to provide evidence of this to your new insurer form your old but that should not be an issue.

I think you will forfeit your 5th yr of NCB if you cancel the policy before it has run a year. Worth asking the new insurer if they will recognise it though.

When I bought a new car the insurance company agreed to recognise I had 3yr NCB and adjust the premium accordingly even though I could'nt apply the NCB to the policy as I still had my old car. Technically you cannot apply NCB to more than one car (on separate policys).

E30 - do you mean that my new insurer might look at the dates and take into account that my NCB is due to increased by one year in a few months? This would be the ideal situation.

John - I'm inclined to agree, a phone call is probably best. Just hate dealing with them any more than I absolutely have to.

I realise the simplest solution is to wait a few months, but sometimes a car comes up that you can't really turn down..

Yeah, you lose the NCB for that year. I changed my car 3 times in a year once and lost the NCB upon each switch because the companies would not cover me.

Sorry, should have been more clear, you are normally credited with full years of NCB that you have earned

Thanks - better than ignoring them altogether, I guess! Looks like I'll be setting myself back 9 months, but hey ho, could be worse I suppose.

As always, thank you very much helpful piston people.
