Water pump question...
Discussion
Okay, I have another question that perhaps I should know the answer too...
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to remove the old water pump without taking the entire car appart?
Really, I got under it to start this project and .... !!!! could they have designed it to be any more difficult?
Records 'show' that it was replaced with the belts... at least there was a charge. I highly doubt that the pump was replaced as it has totally failed and the body of the pump is not exactly pretty...and given the history with the lack of parts in the clutch replacement....
Anyway, I was looking at this and it appears that the entire front of the motor has to be removed! Any help is welcomed!!!

Hi,
The pump can be done insitu, but you need to pull the Aux pulley to gain access to the last WP bolt as it 'lives' just under it. Ocaisionally you'll get lucky and find one where the hole alignment just misses the pulley, but these are 1 in 100. You will want to replace the standard hex bolt with a cap screw (available at most 'Indy's') so next time you won't need to pull the pulley.
Of course, since pulling the pulley, you are 3/4 the way to a timing belt change, so consider this at the same time. You will also have to pull the alternator 'V' belt and the WP/VP 'V' belt, so consider replacing these as well. Other than that, fairly straightforward. Good Luck! Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE

Yea those belts... THAT is why I am slightly annoyed! The belts are new (enough). They were all replaced last March and have less than 3,000 miles on them.
I'm running up to a friends shop tomorrow night as to get it up on a proper lift. Should be easier to get at things standing up vs. flat on my back.
If I EVER design my own motor... the D@#n water pump WILL be easy to get at. This would be an easy thing to design (I have penned some idea based on a 1275CC MG motor). Anyway, I'll give her go tomorrow...
Thanks for the info!

I second what Jim says (he is the real expert around here anyway)
As Bill said (95LOTUS) I replaced my pump 3 times last year, ended up going with a EWP Electric pump.
Gettin the pump off is a pain in the ass but the more you do it the easier it will be
Hopefully you won't find out how to make it easy
