connected tv to home cinema with HDMI but still no sound
Discussion
According to the Panasonic home cinema manual an HDMI cable is all I need but no way can I get any TV sound through cinema system.
I can get it to work by using a headphone jack (out of TV)to red and white phono cable (into cinema box) but that seems a bit basic.
I have a SPDIF (coax) output on the TV and a optical input on the cinema box so guess they are not compatible.
Why will the HDMI cable not do the job, am I missing something on the settings?
What options do I have to ensure I get the best sound and picture options?

Only the very latest TVs have HDMI V1.4 that has an audio return connection. You'll no doubt be able to get sound from your TVs speakers with a DVD/BluRay player connected, but not the other way round as you're trying to do.
For now your best option would be to connect the phono outputs from the TV (assuming it has these) to the aux input (or whatever) on your home cinema. Unless your TV has the Freeview HD capability, you won't really lose anything this way as the sound is only stereo anyway. If you want to connect your optical output to the coax input you can buy an adaptor from places like LectroPaks.
