In this month's Sprint, they say the last 20 Griffs have the sloping back numberplate ala the Chimaera.

Then, further inside, there's a pic of one – ARRRRRRGGHHHHH – they've ruined that classic back end – just as they did with the facelifted Chim with the same type of plate.

All IMO of course.

Doesn't the slanted plate mean you can just fit normal number plates though ? Saves all the hassle of trying to get Back-lit plates made up.... ???

Do you mean Dirk Janssens car on the picture page? If so I don't think this is a final 100 Griffith because it doesn't have 500 wheels and doesn't have the revised rear light cluster or the revised dash etc. R...

Didn't say the pic was one of the last Griffs, just said it was a pic of one with a sloping plate which it is ...

Most, if not all export Griffs and Chimaeras did not have backlit number plates, but angled recessed plates with a top illuminator

I'd never noticed the sloping back plate on the Chimaera until I got the mag today.

I'm glad I've got one of the last of the early series 2's with the backlit plate.

I read the sloping plate came in around '98.

Lee.

Depends on the country in which they're sold, doesn't it? Most European countries have different sizes and types of plates; the Belgians have metal ones that are squarer than ours and won't fit flush in the recess.

Agree with you Mikey. I had a 97P Chimaera with a back-lit plate. It was a feature of these cars as no other cars had the same. Looked great after dark aswell.
Makes you wonder why someone would want to change the last 20 Griffs when the last 100 were already changed/updated!
Cheers......... Andrew

I think it is something to do with the legallity of them after they have made a certain number in the UK.

I know backlit plates are not legal in Germany and some other EU countries. I think that is the main reason for this solution. When importing my Griff to Sweden I had to put external lights on the back of my car to light up the plate. Not that pretty but necessary to get it through our MOT
